Exterior Overview
The Toyota brand is synonymous with greatness, and vehicles like this 2000 Surf are the reason why. Tough, reliable, and inexpensive to maintain, these capable rigs are still soldiering on here in the US with hundreds of thousands of clicks on the odometer. That’s the benefit of buying a Japanese import, and this SSR-G model has logged a mere 116k verified and documented miles since new. Finished in a mean-looking one-off Bravo Black, this super Surf is adorned with some juicy WEDS Keeler alloys, an OEM spare tire swingarm, OEM wing, OEM rainguards, and a rare OEM front bumper protector. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scrapes, the body is in good nick, and this 4×4 is fresh off a comprehensive service. Competent enough to be a daily driver, this safe and spacious SUV would make for a practical kid hauler or decent dedicated overlander. Handsome, tough, and affordable, this Japanese classic does it all.
Interior Overview
The cabin is in above-average shape and is nicely equipped with a couple of sweet factory upgrades. For instance, this truck was spec’d with a 100w wall plug to charge your accessories. If that wasn’t over the top enough, it also has a rear under mirror which deploys from the rear spoiler when in reverse, acting as an analog backup camera. Drivers of all sizes can find the ideal seating position courtesy of a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. The center stack is dominated by a brand-new BOSS USDM head unit. It sounds great and includes Bluetooth hands-free tech, so you can keep your eyes squarely on the road ahead. Above is a simple-to-use digital climate control system which pipes in cold A/C or piping hot heat depending on your preference. We did want to note that the rear heating system has been bypassed, but it does little to affect functionality. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the side windows and rear hatch glass power down electronically. Power folding mirrors and electric locks work like a charm, too, making daily use more enjoyable. The gray cloth seats are in fine shape and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The back row can split-fold, 4-way recline, and tumble forward to create a large flat loading floor. The headliner, door cards, and carpets have escaped major abuse over the years, and aside from some light steering wheel wear, it’s hard to critique the cabin much at all! Even the OEM maintenance booklets and owner’s manual are included with the purchase of this fine vehicle.
Mechanical Overview
Powered by the same durable 2.7L as sold here in the US, this RZN185 is easy to maintain. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3RZ-FE churns to life with the twist of the key. A new engine air filter works to promote top-tier fuel economy and proper power delivery. The four-banger feels healthy as a horse and is mated to a stout automatic gearbox. It shifts properly, and the pilot can toggle between 2WD and 4WD on the fly. For situations requiring more traction, a low range and center locking differential can also be utilized. The Hilux gets up to highway merging speeds without breaking a sweat and is a comfortable interstate cruiser. The long wheelbase aids stability, and we have shored up the suspension with new front lower control arms, new front lower ball joints, and a new passenger side inner tie rod. Freshly aligned, it tracks straight as an arrow. The power steering provides decent feedback for a truck and has been bolstered with a new idler pulley. The ABS brakes feel confident, and new pads and rotors up front should keep things that way. The all-terrain tires are knee-deep in tread, and this retail-ready rig is turn-key ready to roll!
