It's easy to see why enthusiasts flock to 3rd generation Hilux Surf models, especially when they're powered by the same 3.4l V6 we received stateside.

Exterior Overview

If you tried to find a USDM equivalent to this 2000 Hilux Surf in our domestic market, it would be a tall order. Even if you found one in similar condition, it likely wouldn’t have the same 128k verified and documented miles on the clock. Nor would it have the same laundry list of factory upgrades and options,  or a recent extensive service record, like what we offer here at our facility. With all the above applying to this SSR-G, it’s easy to see why enthusiasts flock to 3rd generation Hilux Surf models, especially when they’re powered by the same 3.4L V6 we received stateside. Finished in Millennium Silver (K73), this one looks the part, and is set off by an optional OEM front bumper protector, OEM spare tire carrier, and rear spoiler. OEM rainguards and refinished factory alloys complete the aesthetic, and save for a few minor chips and dings, there’s not a lot to complain about cosmetically. For a dependable daily, terrific trail toy, or dedicated adventure mobile, this Japanese Classic manages to knock it out of the park time and time again!

Interior Overview

Redesigned to withstand the challenges of the new millennium, this N185 Surf features a facelifted cabin with useful upgrades like updated cupholders, redesigned switchgear, and durable tan cloth upholstery. Still standard is full slate of power equipment, like power windows, locks, mirrors, and a drop-down convex backup mirror. Even the rear window rolls down automatically to let in a fresh breeze. The dash is trimmed in a complementary tan vinyl, and the center stack features functional digital climate control, with automatic climate adjustment to supply cold A/C and hot heat on demand. Adjacent to the HVAC, touch-screen AddZest audio functions as expected. The seating surfaces are in above average condition for their vintage, with no discernible rips, stains, or tears accumulating after 25 years on the road. The headliner and carpet are in equally good condition, too. The rear bench is spacious, and can fold flat to accommodate additional cargo. Even the rear seat backs four-way recline for optimal rear seat comfort! That’s not to say the cabin is perfect, as it’s worth noting the keyless entry no longer works, the airbag module is defective, and the rear headrests have skipped town. Save for these minor defects, we think the overall condition will impress most motorists, and really helps to drive the value of this example home. We’ve even held on to the plush factory floor mats, which jazz up the cabin and protect your upholstery beneath, as well as a factory owner’s manual and maintenance booklet.

Mechanical Overview

Sharing a platform with US 4Runner models down to the drivetrain itself, the Surf offers one of the most painless JDM ownership experiences possible. Having a bulletproof 5VZ-FE powerplant under the hood doesn’t hurt, either. To get you road-ready for daily driving, our trained technicians have performed a comprehensive service. For starters, a new engine air filter and fuel filter complement our standard oil and filter service. From there, we replaced the leaking old valve cover gaskets with new ones, resealing the covers with new half moon seals. New spark plugs were also installed, while we were in there. With the maintenance performed this Surf drives like a peach, and the six cylinder has more than enough get up and go. Power is sent to an automatic transmission, and is distributed amongst all four wheels via a selective transfercase. Rear wheel drive is best for fuel economy, but off-road die hards will be glad to see the center locking differential and low range are in good working order. We bolstered the suspension with brand new shocks all the way around, and also took care of new rear lower control arm bushings and front swaybar links to improve drivability. We also took care of an extensive rebuild of the power steering system, including a freshly rebuilt rack with new seals, boots, and inner and outer tie rods. We flushed the system with new fluid, and installed new rack bushings before it went back on the car. Afterwards, a fresh four wheel alignment was performed. We installed new front pads and rotors to keep braking performance up to snuff, and with four new Falken tires on all corners, this super SUV will reliably start, steer, and stop wherever you need it to go!
