Exterior Overview
It’s clear that with the release of the 6th-gen 4Runner, real deal analog SUVs are dead. Computers, sensors, cameras, and emissions equipment have ruined these timeless trucks, but the good news is that we have your back. We retail vehicles like this 1999 Surf, which are easier to maintain, repair, and motor about. Finished in a classic Black (204), this rig is set off by a chrome Satoshi-style grille, chrome mirror caps and door handles, an OEM spoiler, privacy tint, and wide 16″ Pro Comp Xtreme alloys. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the body is in fine shape, and this 139k verified and documented mile 4×4 is fresh off a comprehensive service. Spec’d with the same engine sold here in the US, repairs and servicing are as easy as it gets. Safe and spacious, these blue-collar SUVs make for fun family haulers, wicked weekend playtoys, and anything in between. A Japanese Classic should be reliable, capable, and durable, and this SSR-X certainly fits the bill!
Interior Overview
The cabin is in above-average shape and was clearly cared for overseas. Access is made more seamless thanks to functional keyless entry. Pilots of all sizes can find the perfect seating position courtesy of a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. Power mirrors, power locks, and power windows all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The center stack is close by and easy to reach. The digital automatic climate system works like a charm and doles out piping hot heat and cool A/C. Below, a touchscreen Clarion head unit fills the cockpit with tunes. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard. The stylized blue and black upholstery steals the show. The same material is mirrored in the door cards, too. The material lacks any major rips, stains, or tears and is durable, too. The middle row can split-fold, 4-way recline, and tumble forward to create a flat loading area. The headliner is in good shape, as are the carpets, and overall it’s hard to nitpick the cabin much at all.
Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, this is a true body on frame truck. That means it can withstand lots of abuse. The same can be said for the 3RZ-FE engine. Fresh off an oil and filter service, it churns to life with the twist of the key courtesy of a new 12v battery. To keep the oil level full, one of our trained techs has resealed the oil pump completely. A set of new spark plugs and a new engine air filter work to properly atomize the fuel and maximize power. The 2.7L is linked to a stout automatic gearbox that sends torque through a selective transfer case. The driver can toggle between 2WD and 4WD on the fly, and a center locker and low range are on standby should you encounter loose surfaces. It gets up to highway merging speeds without breaking a sweat, and the long wheelbase distributes road imperfections well. New front lower control arms and ball joints were installed, as this is a common failure point, and we also replaced the inner and outer tie rods before we aligned it. The ABS brake feels confident, and the power steering is easy to articulate. New Falken tires were mounted and balanced at each corner. Freshly aligned, the Surf tracks true and the new tires should last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
