Exterior Overview
The 100 series Land Cruiser is as timeless as an SUV can get. The platform saw a banner nine year production run, and even to this day it’s common to see multiple 100’s putting around on your daily commute. This can be attributed mostly to the near-bulletproof drivetrain, but also to the chassis’ refinement and modernity. Our 1999 is a real looker, finished in Warm Silver (1B1), and set off by a few stylish upgrades. A chrome grille complements chrome headlight, tail light, and side marker surrounds, and the rear end is set off by a 2″ Suntrex hitch receiver, and a dual Ganador exhaust. A factory optional rear spoiler and OEM rainguards round off the aesthetic, and new ICON wheels were installed to complement the cosmetics. Save for a few minor chips and dings on some of the panels, and a slight mismatch of the headlights, the cosmetics are in well above average shape for the vehicle’s vintage. Also above average is the verified and documented mileage on the clock, which is a measly 83k. This 4×4 hauler is up to date on maintenance and really knows how to capture the heart of the enthusiast. With style, service, and swagger, it’s easy to see why we’d call this one a Japanese Classic!
Interior Overview
The cabin is spacious, clean and nicely equipped. Upgrades include a Pioneer audio system, which also features integrated Bluetooth and MP3 options to pump in your tunes. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are on board to promote safety. The center stack features woodgrain accent trim and frames digital automatic climate control. For your rearmost passengers, dual-zone climate controls allow cold A/C and hot heat to be funneled directly to the rear. The driver benefits from a slate of electric amenities making daily use more enjoyable. Power locks and power-folding side mirrors work in typical Toyota fashion and cruise control is on hand too. The driver benefits from a tilt adjustable steering column and power lumbar support to find the ideal piloting position. The seats are trimmed in a soft tan cloth. They lack any rips, stains or tears and the same can be said for the headliner and carpets. An optional third row expands seating to eight and can be stowed tidily against the sides of the trunk. The dash materials are clean, and aside from a small slit in the driver’s door panel and missing 3rd row headrests, it’s clear this interior is in far above average shape for its age.
Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, this Land Cruiser follows a tried and true recipe for 4×4 prestige. The 2UZ-FE under the bonnet is refined, yet serves up gobs of power and torque for unmatched performance. It’s also easy to access, thanks to new hood struts. The 4.7l motor cranks over with haste and is fresh off a recent service here at the shop, where we started with an oil and filter service, and also installed new valve cover gaskets to make sure you don’t lose a drop of lubricant. A new engine air filter was also installed, as were eight new spark plugs and coil packs, and this luxury cruiser is comfortable, quiet, and composed on pavement, even at higher speeds. Power is sent straight to a legendary 4×4 system, and an automatic gearbox goes through all four speeds predictably. With a center locking differential and low range, this Landy can go anywhere, truly. The suspension benefits from new front lower ball joints, and rear upper and lower control arms. The factory active height control suspension cycles through modes predictably, rides well, and passed state inspection with flying colors. The power steering is feather light, and the ABS brakes are strong. The ICON wheels are wrapped in brand new 33″ Falken all-terrains, keeping you glued to the pavement for tens of thousands of miles to come. Last but not least, we threw this J100 up on the alignment rack to dial everything in!
