It goes without saying that Toyota's HiAce is a versatile model, but this 1999 Grand Hiace is one of the most feature-packed vans we've seen to date! Best of all, it still has all the underpinnings that enthusiasts love.

Exterior Overview

It goes without saying that Toyota’s HiAce is a versatile model, but this 1999 Grand Hiace is one of the most feature-packed vans we’ve seen to date! Best of all, it still has all the underpinnings that enthusiasts love. Steadfast 4WD and an intercooled version of Toyota’s 1KZ-TE make this a hot prospect in the market, and with a full slate of power amenities, dual sliding doors, and 78k verified and documented miles, this unique and useful transporter is ready for daily duty here in the 21st century. Finished in Alpine White (300), this Grand Hiace is set off by 15″ refinished OEM alloys, OEM rainguards, and a stylish rear spoiler. Aside from a few paint defects, scuffs, and dings, this 25 year old van is no worse for the wear, and the diesel powerplants are known for racking up the miles, needing only basic maintenance. Perfect for van-life enthusiasts, campsite cruisers, or ideal as a long-range highway hauler, this Hiace is a serious Toyota, and a suitable Japanese Classic for those with good taste!

Interior Overview

Real vanners will tell you, it’s what’s on the inside that counts, and the Hiace exemplifies that statement. Toyota was really hitting its stride in the late nineties, and the brand created a cabin that’s safe, refined, and modern too! Families will enjoy the dual sliding door design, which allows for safe entry and exit on both sides of the road. The passenger door slides open and closed electronically as well. Dual SRS airbags keep things safe up front for the driver and passenger and add some peace of mind. A backup camera and sonar assist are helpful, too. Aiding daily use, power windows, locks, and electric folding side mirrors work like a charm, and a massive electric moonroof is mounted centrally to supplement the cabin with a cool breeze. The front sunroof also tilts up manually, and for a more controlled climate, the driver can cycle cold A/C and hot heat into both front and rear zones. Adjacent to the HVAC, Panasonic touch screen audio works like a charm. The driver can get comfortable behind a tilt-adjustable steering column thanks to power-adjustable seating up front. The middle and rear bench is versatile, too, and middle row passengers can swivel the seats 180 degrees for some road-trim camaraderie. If facing forward, feel free to flip down the footrests from the front seat backs as well. The headliner is tidy, and the carpets are in fine shape. Save for some steering wheel wear, and a missing factory TV display out back, this Grand Hiace’s cabin should satisfy most anyone!

Mechanical Overview

Under the hood is a serious powerhouse. It’s efficient too, and factory intercooled to squeeze out more ponies. The 1KZ-TE turbodiesel is one of our favorite four-bangers here, and we’ve given this one a recent service to keep this HiAce in tip-top mechanical shape. It cranks over with haste, thanks to a new 12v battery, and we installed all new accessory belts so you’re not left stranded from old rubber. We took care of a basic tune up, installing a new engine air filter and fuel filter, and installed a brand new alternator to keep things properly charged. Power is sent to a full-time 4WD system via an automatic gearbox, that makes good use of the turbodiesel’s abundance of low-end grunt. The suspension is comfortable too, and the long wheelbase pays dividends on longer interstate hauls. The power steering is also easy to maneuver, although our techs noted a small seep from the seals that’s occurred over time. New front and rear brake pads bolster the ABS and keep stopping distances to a minimum. We also resurfaced the rotors to prolong pad life. The wheels are wrapped in brand new TOYO, and with the maintenance performed, and a fresh alignment on all four wheels, this lovely diesel hauler is ready to rock for tens of thousands of miles to come!
