Interior Overview
The cabin is more stylized than your average Toyota and comes with plenty of power options, as well. Accessing the interior is a breeze thanks to functional keyless entry and the driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column to find the ideal driving position. Power windows, power mirrors, and electric locks all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. Both occupants up front benefit from dual SRS airbags for added peace of mind, and this Caldina is equipped with anti-lock brakes. The seats simply steal the show, and the stylized blue and orange accents spice up the cabin and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The door cards are done in the same material, and are in good shape, too. The rear row can fold flat to create a larger cargo area and even the OEM security shade is installed in the back. Rear occupants have an integrated wall plug built into the back of the center console and legroom is decent for the Caldina’s relatively small exterior dimensions. A simple-to-use digital climate control system can circulate piping hot heat and cold A/C through the cockpit and the OEM audio above works like a charm. The carpets, headliner, and soft touch surfaces have resisted major abuse over the years and aside from some missing shifter trim, it’s hard to nitpick the insides of this wagon. Included with this wagon’s purchase are owner’s manuals, maintenance booklets, and the coolest set of OEM floor mats this side of the Atlantic.
Mechanical Overview
Built to best Subaru, the Caldina makes a compelling case to be considered the better car. It starts with the iconic 3S-GTE engine under the hood. Loved for its power output and reliability, this 2.0L churns to life care of a new 12v battery and stays running properly thanks to a brand new alternator. Fresh off an oil and filter service, this four-banger also benefits from a new fuel filter and engine air filter. The 1998cc mill is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. The driver can manually shift the unit thanks to integrated steering wheel shifter buttons, adding to the sporty driving experience. Power is sent to both axles, ideal for those living in snowy climates and performance enthusiasts alike. The little estate accelerates impressively and sustained highway driving is effortless. New shocks were installed at each corner to smooth out the ride and we also replaced the left rear CV boot while we were in there. The brakes feel confident and the power-assisted steering is light, yet on point. Traction comes from four brand new tires mounted and balanced at each corner. The new rubber quiets down the ride noticeably and will provide tens of thousands of miles of grip for years to come.
