Exterior Overview
While everyone was bugging out about the end times and Y2K, Toyota was pumping out world class SUVs like this Hilux Surf. Finished in an aptly named Millenium Silver (K73), this rig is set off by refinished black WEDS Keeler 16″ alloys, factory rainguards, and a wild OEM graphics package. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scratches this paintwork is in good nick and this 4WD model is fresh off a recent service. Powered by the same, durable gasoline engine as was sold here stateside, this SSR-X is fresh off a recent service and is offered with a mere 132k verified and documented miles on the clock. Perfect as a year-round family hauler, cool campsite cruiser, or wonderful weekend warrior this safe, reliable, and handsome Japanese Classic leaves little to be desired. Affordable, easy to service, and capable, this stellar 1999 Surf is the ticket!

Interior Overview
The interior is in good shape overall and is nicely equipped. Access to the cabin is made much more seamless thanks to operational keyless entry. Dual SRS airbags are standard for those who might be safety conscious, as is ABS. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and the center stack is close by and within arm’s reach. The digital automatic climate system is simple to use and supplies the cabin with cool air conditioning and piping hot heat. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the windows and rear hatch glass power down with the press of a few buttons. Below the climate buttons resides a modern Alpine head unit that belts out the tunes and adds some modernity to the interior. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. The power locks and mirrors function in typical Toyota fashion making daily use more enjoyable. The cognac-colored cloth is in good shape and matches the door cards. Aside from some light wear on the driver seat bottom the rest of the upholstery lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The rear row can recline slightly or split fold, creating a flat loading floor. The headliner and door cards are in good shape and the carpets have withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse. Even the OEM toolkit is still on hand. Cared for in a prior life, this cockpit is one of the best in recent memory.-

Mechanical Overview
What makes this rig so special is the gearbox. If that doesn’t get you excited we also just installed a new clutch, saving the American owner a good chunk of change! A manual SUV is a rare beast, and the 3RZ-FE engine is near bulletproof, which makes for a good pairing. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 2.7L churns to life care promptly with the twist of the key. A new intake air filter works to maximize performance and one of our trained techs has installed a set of new accessory belts to keep the electronics properly powered. A pesky oil leak was fixed at the distributor o-ring and the four banger runs right as rain, and pulls hard to redline. Gear changes are made more rewarding thanks to a new shifter bushing, and the gearbox lacks any hitches or grinds. Torque is fed to the rear wheels or all four, depending on the driver’s preference, and the selectable transfer case can be engaged on the fly. Unlike most gassers, this RZN185 was optioned with a factory center locker. This allows the torque to be fixed 50/50 front and rear and even a low range can be utilized, too. The suspension has been refreshed heavily and rides impressively well. The front and rear shocks were replaced and are all new at each corner. The steering system was also rehabbed, with a rebuilt rack, and new inner and outer tie rods were chucked in. The platform was aligned, and the power steering is light and direct. This truck goes right where you point it, and is more responsive than our typical SUV. Lastly, we mounted and balanced four new 31″ Falken tires. The new rubber looks mean, reduces road noise, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
