Exterior Overview
There’s a reason the Hilux Surf sells so well in the US. These rigs are built on a tried and true platform, are generally in much better shape than domestic 4Runners. Models like this 1999 SSR-G are backed by a determined diesel powertrain that earns high marks on fuel economy and power, too! Trucks like this are indestructible, yet they’re still easy on the eyes. Finished in Millenium Silver Metallic (K73), this Surf is set off by an optional rear spoiler, rear spare tire swingarm, a new 2″ lift from Ironman 4×4, and OEM rainguards. Save for some minor chips, dings, and paint fade, it’s hard to complain about the cosmetics, although we wanted to note the passenger front fender was replaced at some point in Japan. Better yet, the 140k miles on the clock are verified and documented, indicating this trusty Toyota is barely broken in and ready to last a lifetime. We gush about the N185 platform, and our clients love them equally. It’s safe to say this is a Japanese Classic nearly anyone can get behind!
Interior Overview
Toyota nailed the Surf’s interior design in all facets, and this delightful cockpit has certainly stood the test of time. Finished in a complementary tan cloth, the upholstery shows well, with little to turn your nose up at save for some bolster wear and staining on the driver’s bucket. The rest of the materials are in good nick, and the dashboard has resisted any major distortion that typically plagues this model. Redesigned for this 3rd gen’s facelift, the center stack features digital HVAC, a modern Kenwood touch screen headunit with Bluetooth, and a relocation of the factory cupholders, which no longer risk coating your dash in hot coffee. Plenty of power amenities are on hand to make daily driving a breeze. Power windows, locks, and side mirrors work like a charm, and a power moonroof is on hand, with controls for an optional field monitor close by if you need additional data on outside conditions. The rear bench can fit three additional passengers with ease, and to maximize the cargo hold in the back, power rear glass can turn your hatch area into a pseudo truck bed. The headliner is in fine shape and the carpets are no worse for the wear for being 25 years old. If we were to scrutinize anything, some light wear is present on the door cards and steering wheel. Other than that, this super Surf really impresses, with factory keyless entry, and an optional factory air purifier sweetening the deal!
Mechanical Overview
We love the 1KZ-TE under the bonnet, and it’s not just because these peppy turbodiesels were forbidden fruit in the States! They happen to be exciting to drive, frugal on fuel, and easier to service than their gasoline counterparts. Ours has a laundry list of preventative maintenance performed by our trained technicians, who have fully rehabbed this Surf to get it on track for the road ahead and installed 2 new 12v batteries to aid ignition. The next owner need not worry about replacing the timing belt, as we installed a brand new one alongside a new water pump, thermostat, and new serpentine belts to drive your accessories. The engine air filter was replaced, and a fuel filter and oil and filter service are part of our standard maintenance procedure on these turbodiesels. This 1KZ drives like a million bucks, and the 3.0 is mated to an automatic gearbox which distributes power via a selective transfercase. Standard 2WD works like a charm and the true adventurer can engage 4WD high, low, and a center locking differential at the push of a button. We addressed some general suspension wear and tear by chucking out all the tired OEM components and replacing them with a brand new Ironman 4×4 lift! In addition to the shocks and springs, we also installed new front lower control arms, ball joints, and rear upper and lower control arms to boot. We also took care of some new front swaybar links to keep things stable as you cruise our stateside highways and byways. The power steering is communicative and easy to direct, and we’ve rebuilt the steering rack fully, throwing in new inner and outer tie rods, boots, and steering rack bushings. We even rebuilt the power steering pump with new seals, for good measure. The ABS brakes were bolstered with new pads and rotors up front, and pay dividends when stopping on loose surfaces. A fresh alignment was needed after tearing down this drivetrain, and we mounted and balanced 4 new Falken tires on refinished factory alloys to aid aesthetics and handling. This Surf is as turn key as you can get, and you need not break the bank prepping it for the road ahead!
