Exterior Overview

Not only is the S15 Silvia one of the most collectible Japanese Classics you can get your hands on, but it’s one heck of a driver’s car too. For the chassis’ final iteration, Nissan capitalized on their foolproof, lightweight, rear-drive formula and made it safer, smoother, and sturdier than its predecessors. Our 1999 Spec R is a fine example, finished in Sparkling Silver (WV2). Set off by an OEM optional aero package, OEM fog lamps, a factory high-rise wing, and 17″ Enkei RPF-1 alloys, this Silvia is OEM plus in all the right ways. Best of all, this turbocharged coupe boasts only 92k verified/documented miles on the ticker. Fresh off a recent service, ripe with factory options and upgrades, and in squeaky-clean condition throughout, this is an S15 for the purist. Interior Overview

Nissan nailed the design of the S15 in more ways than just exterior aesthetics. The interior is nicely laid out, crafted with premium materials, and is bolstered with plenty of power equipment to handle the demands of day to day driving. The sport mesh seats have held up better than most 25 year old upholstery, and show no discernible rips, stains, or snags to note, save for a small tear in the driver’s bolster. Also in good shape are the dash plastics, and redesigned center stack, which assumes a more ergonomic layout. Digital automatic climate control is on standby, with cold A/C and hot heat, and lies adjacent to a Kenwood headunit, oozing period-correct goodness. A full slate of power equipment is also present, with power locks, windows, and electric folding mirrors assisting day to day use tremendously. The remaining interior materials are in good shape, from the anthracite headliner to the matching carpets beneath. The trunk is spacious, and the rear seatbacks can fold flat if you need to expand the cargo hold. Overall, there’s little to complain about this S15’s interior condition. It was clearly cared for well in a prior life, and the only thing we can bother to nitpick is some light wear on the steering wheel.

Mechanical Overview

The Silvia didn’t earn its reputation overnight, and a lot of the vehicle’s prowess in motorsports can be attributed to the SR20DET that powers it. Fresh off a recent service here at the shop, we’ve rehabbed this four banger with plenty of good service, starting with a fresh oil and filter service. It cranks over with haste, thanks to a newly installed 12v battery, and a new engine air filter and fuel filter keep the 2.0 contaminant-free. We rehabbed the SR with new spark plugs, coil pack connectors, and a valve cover gasket to shore up any unwanted oil leaks. With the exception of an HKS blowoff valve, this motor is mechanically stock and it’s linked to a slick shifting six-speed manual, that goes through the tree without any hitches or grinds. A NISMO catback exhaust unlocks a bit of growl from the four banger, boost comes on strong, and power is hammered to the rear wheels. The factory suspension rides well, and is comfortable and compliant. We installed new front tension arms to dial in the handling a tad, and we performed a fresh four wheel alignment afterwards to make this Silvia road-ready. The power steering is direct, and easy to maneuver, and we replaced the rear brake pads to bolster the ABS and keep stopping distances short. The Enkei wheels are wrapped in brand new Falken all-season rubber we installed here at the shop. In above average condition underneath, this S15 is a smart purchase, whether you choose to drive it every day, or once in a blue moon!
