Japan has always known how to push a chassis to its full potential, and this 1999 Subaru Legacy GT is a far cry from the neutered grocery getters we get here in the States. It's backed by a raucous twin turbocharged drivetrain and this example shows well to boot, racking up just 102k verified and documented miles over the years. Boasting a clean Aspen White (51E) exterior, and set off by OEM rainguards, optional rear bumper spats, a factory rear spoiler, and HID headlamps. Save for a few paint imperfections, scratches and swirls, the exterior is in better shape than most 25 year old Subarus and it's clear this one was cared for in a prior life as well. New Outbacks are bulky, pricey, and lack character, why not try on this real deal Japanese Classic for size?

The interior is shod in premium materials and feels a bit upmarket too, thanks to an OEM optional McIntosh audio and leather accented seating. The upholstery has held up well over the years, and the bucket seats are free of any unwanted rips, stains, or other defects. The driver gains a power adjustable seat and a tilt steering column to get comfortable, and a factory MOMO steering wheel houses an SRS airbag for any on road emergencies. The passenger gets one too, and it's housed in a dashboard free of any unwanted cracks or fading. The center stack has a flip-out euro style cupholder and an adjacent digital automatic climate control system that can dole out cold A/C or hot heat at a moment's notice. The McIntosh system really sings too, and supplements the boxer growl nicely. The back seats are as spacious as you'd expect, and they can also fold flat if you need to maximize the cargo capacity in this sport wagon. Aiding daily use, the power windows are functional, as are the locks and folding mirrors. There's even a retractable net in the cargo area to keep your furry friends from escaping to the front. This wagon has a lot going for it, and it's a treat to drive around compared to more barebones Imprezas and Foresters. We even retained the owner's manual and plenty of maintenance booklets to preserve the history of this lovely Legacy!

The EJ206 under the bonnet is fashioned with twin turbochargers, but this shouldn't turn any shadetree mechanic or enthusiast away, as the vast majority of parts are shared with other turbo EJ's here in the states! This flat-4 is fresh off a recent service and we dropped in a new 12v battery to aid ignition and perform a proper road test. The original timing belt was nearing its end of life as well, so we pampered this 2.0TT with a new belt, water pump, and cam seals while we were in there. We also tended to some leaky valve cover gaskets, and dropped in new spark plugs. With the maintenance performed this wagon soars up to highway speeds and the automatic gearbox feeds Subaru's legendary symmetrical AWD system with haste. To keep your transmission fluid internal, we resealed the pan on the gearbox and also changed out both front axle seals for good measure. The Bilstein suspension is comfortable for a touring wagon, ideal for longer highway drives or cruises. The steering is on point too, thanks to new inner and outer tie rods we installed up front. The ABS brakes stop forcefully and to maximize traction we wrapped the stock alloys in fresh all-season rubber. Good looking and full of tread they'll keep you planted to the pavement for tens of thousands of miles to come!
