This 1999 Cygnus was aimed at the luxury market, but is also reliable and inexpensive to maintain, as it shares its bulletproof V8 drivetrain with its US sibling.

Exterior Overview

Comfortable, capable, and cool the Land Cruiser J100 is a well-rounded SUV. This 1999 Cygnus was aimed at the luxury market, but is also reliable and inexpensive to maintain, as it shares its bulletproof V8 drivetrain with its US sibling. Best of all, these unkillable rigs have logged a fraction of the use of our American models. For instance, this White Pearl (057) example has clocked a mere 110k verified and documented miles, and is freshly serviced. Set off by WEDS Keeler alloys and OEM rainguards, this handsome truck is easy on the eyes. Boasting a well-appointed cabin with plenty of optional equipment, safety items, and space, this terrific Toyota would make for a durable daily driver, year round family hauler, or proficient off-road playtoy. A Japanese Classic for all time, this classy Cygnus is turn key and ready to rock!

Interior Overview

The cabin is expansive and access is made more seamless thanks to functional keyless entry.  This Cygnus was optioned with leather, which is uncommon in Japan, and seating arrangements extend back to third row jump seats, which fold off to the side if you need to expand the cargo hold. The cowhides are in good nick aside from normal wear from daily use, and the same material is mirrored in the door cards. Both driver and passenger benefit from power adjustable seats, and dual SRS airbags up front for added peace of mind. The sculpted dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and is in good shape overall. To find the ideal driving position, the wheel power tilts. Power folding mirrors, power locks and power windows all work in typical Toyota fashion. The digital climate climate system can be controlled with a touchscreen and can blend piping hot heat and cold A/C for year round use. Heated seats are key to have in winter and were spec’d on this truck, too!  If you prefer more natural ventilation, a large power moonroof can retract, and the rear quarter glass pops outward. The OEM audio works as it should, and fills the cabin with tunes to supplement your commute. The headliner and carpets are in good shape and aside from the nonoperational telescoping steering column function, and some steering wheel wear, it’s hard to critique the cabin.

Mechanical Overview

The 2UZ-FE under the bonnet is a legendary engine. The 4,7L was sold here in the US, so parts acquisition is as easy as it gets. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the V8 springs to life care of a new 12v battery. A new fuel filter was installed as soon as it got on the lift and we also replaced the engine air filter with a new one. The 2UZ is linked to a stout automatic gearbox and pulls hard to redline. The transmission makes good use of the V8’s abundant mid range power and shifts like a champ, sending torque through a FullTime 4WD system. A center locker and low range are on standby in case you plan to travel down a muddy trail or want to take this Land Cruiser out on the beach. It sails up to highway speeds with confidence and can be slowed down with aplomb, care of new front and rear brake pads and rotors. The suspension is soft and insulates the cabin from large and small road imperfections. For state inspection, we installed new rear upper and lower control arms. The steering rack also required a full rebuild so that was taken care of with new seals, boots, and inner and outer tie rods. New rack bushings were also replaced before we aligned this lovable Landy. It goes right where you point it, and grip is handled by four new Falken all-terrain tires mounted and balanced at each corner. The Rubitrek rubber not only looks mean, but will provide tens of thousands of miles of year-round grip for a long while to come. Turn key and ready to rock, this terrific Toyota is the best on the block!
