This 1997 Space Gear is a cherry example, boasting astonishingly low miles, and set off by some period-correct options and upgrades.

Exterior Overview

The Delica is the ultimate weekend camping companion. It also can double as an open air overlanding office, and it does a bang-up job at handling the daily commute as well. This 1997 Space Gear is a cherry example, boasting an astonishing 47k verified and documented miles. It is finished in Mystic Black (X08) and set off by some period-correct options and upgrades. A factory front brushguard, rear bash bar, and trunk handle give the body a bit of protection, and an ultra rare OEM wind deflector rounds off the front fascia. Quad driving lamps also improve visibility in low-light scenarios. OEM rainguards adorn the front windows, and save for some spots of paint fade, and some miscellaneous scratches and dings throughout, the cosmetics are far above the norm for a 28 year old vehicle. These vans are popular for their real-deal selective 4×4 system, and this V6 model shares an engine with USDM Mitsubishi’s, making parts and service a cinch. Any way you use it, the L400 Delica is a Japanese Classic that just makes sense!

Interior Overview

The interior is loaded to the brim with amenities, niceties, and functional power equipment. An optional Crystal Lite glass roof gives the already spacious cabin an expansive feel, and suede upholstery spans three rows of versatile seating that slides, swivels, and folds flat for when it’s time for shut-eye. It’s also safe, featuring more crash support than its predecessor, and a driver SRS airbag if things get hairy. The switchgear, climate controls, and upgraded Panasonic audio sit front and center, and cold A/C and hot heat are on tap if you need this Delica for seasonal driving. Power windows work well up front, as does a front power moonroof, and power retractable sunshades for the rear. Electric locks and power folding side view mirrors work like a charm too. While this Space Gear is a treat to drive, the rear passengers benefit from a swiveling middle row and extendable footrests to maximize comfort and camaraderie on a long road trip. The upholstery is in good shape, showing no rips, stains, or tears, and the headliners and carpets are also tight and tidy. If you need to maximize cargo space, the rear seats even deploy off to the side, and aside from a broken sunroof handle and a touchy volume control on the radio, it’s really hard to nitpick this overtly versatile cabin!

Mechanical Overview

Mitsubishi decided to move the engine forward for the L400 generation, which freed up some space inside and improved safety and handling dynamics. The 6G72 is an ideal mill to squeeze under the bonnet, as it shares a bevy of parts with US Mitsubishis, and has plenty of ponies to propel you up to speed. Ours is fresh off a recent service by our trained technicians too, and this V6 cranks over with haste care of a new 12v battery. Fresh off an oil and filter service, a new engine air filter, and fuel filter keep unwanted contaminants out of your combustion chamber, and this 3.0 runs like a top. Power is sent to an automatic gearbox, which shifts smoothly and distributes torque through a real deal selective transfercase, which has a center locking differential and 4WD low on hand if you need to tackle some trails. We replaced the front output seal, and this all terrain trooper can hang with the big boys off the beaten path. The factory suspension is comfortable, as is the steering, and we installed a new rear caliper, rear rotors, and brake pads to shore up the driveline. The gunmetal alloys are wrapped in fresh Toyo all terrains that enhance the rugged aesthetic but most importantly maximize grip on and off the beaten path!
