Exterior Overview
Honda can certainly design a people mover, and this 1999 StepWgn is a prime example of on of Japan’s most enduring models. With seating for eight and a reliable B20 four-cylinder, this van is reliable, practical, and unique. Finished in a classic Taffeta White (NH-538M), this transporter is set off by a custom 90’s themed graphic, Zauber grille, refinished OEM tri spoke alloys, and an OEM optional front lip, side skirts, and rear valance. Aside from a few spots of touch up paint, chips, and scuffs, the body is in good nick and this RF1 is fresh off a recent service and boasts a mere 49k verified and documented miles on the clock. It also has one of the cleanest undersides we’ve seen! Ideal for shuttling the kids to soccer practice, and at home cruising to the local Cars & Coffee, this trusty Japanese Classic does it all and won’t break the bank!
Interior Overview
The Stepwgn has a spacious cabin and it’s filled with premium materials and storage space. It also features a desirable third row layout, with stowable and swivel seating. After the initial launch, Honda updated this van substantially. This example includes dual SRS airbags and ABS brakes to give peace of mind to all occupants. The driver has a clear and commanding view of the road ahead thanks to the two box design and the dashboard lacks any cracking or fading. A dual glovebox houses the original owners manual and maintenance booklets and has loads of space left for other knickknacks. The automatic climate system is intuitive to operate and features ice cold A/C and piping hot heat. Rear occupants have their own climate zone too, adding to the experience. Above the climate controls is a touchscreen Addzest radio which pumps tunes through the cabin and can drown out the kids in the rear. Functional power windows, power locks and power mirrors all make daily use more enjoyable. The gray cloth seats are soft to the touch and lack any major rips, stains or tears. Flexible seating options convert to a sleeping platform if you want to catch a quick catnap, and the middle row swivels around for an impromptu rummy game on a long road trip. There’s even a foldable jump seat if you need to tow around an additional passenger. The door cards and headliner are in good shape as are the carpets, which are protected by the original carpet mats. Aside from a nonfunctional power folding driver mirror it’s hard to critique the cabin as it was clearly cared for overseas.
Mechanical Overview
Based on the CRV platform, this Honda utilizes a familiar drivetrain to us in the States. Tried and true, the B20 under the bonnet runs right and rain and is fresh off an oil and filter service. A new valve cover gasket ensures the oil levels stay on full. To maintain thermal management, we performed a coolant flush and installed a new thermostat. The B20 feels healthy as a horse and is connected to a stout automatic gearbox. Power is sent to the front wheels and this StepWgn sails up to highway speeds without breaking a sweat. It slows down quickly due to its light curb weight and ABS is standard. The factory suspension offers ample ground clearance and the power steering is light yet on point. The iconic tri-spoke wheels are wrapped in good Bridgestone rubber. Turn key and ready to rock, this reliable and safe hauler is highly practical and undoubtedly unique.
