Exterior Overview
In the late 90’s, you’d think top Toyota executives were a bit paranoid about Y2K, as it seemed like they were building all their vehicles to survive the apocalypse! It’s why there’s still an abundance of 4Runners on the road. The brand designed a vehicle that just won’t quit. While this says a lot about this truck’s dependability, our 1999 Hilux Surf SSR-G touts the condition, and options that simply aren’t found on stateside examples, and with only 67k miles on the ticker, you’d be hard pressed to find a domestic example that comes close. Finished in a fresh coat of Iridium Silver Metallic, the cosmetics are in good shape overall, set off by an optional factory rear spoiler, spare tire swingarm, an OEM optional front bumper protector, and 16″ aftermarket alloys. The proof is in the pudding, this V6 Surf will be able to outlast most vehicles on the road, and look good doing it. Ideal as a dependable daily driver, wonderful weekend warrior, or Toyota meet standout, this Japanese Classic Surf is the real deal!
Interior Overview
Slightly facelifted for the ’99 model year, the interior features some minor tweaks that improve daily drivability tenfold. In true Toyota fashion, the build quality is unparalleled, and this cabin is chock full of durable materials. The seats are upholstered in tan cloth that lacks any major rips, stains, or tears typically found on vehicles of this vintage. The same can be said for the dash, although we did want to note some typical lifting around the corner of the glovebox. Still, the condition is good overall, and the abundance of amenities more than make up for it. The center stack frames a redesigned digital automatic climate control display. Ripe with cold A/C, and hot heat for your front and rear passengers, it’s easy to use and ideal for seasonal climates. Adjacent to the HVAC, optional OEM audio displays clearly and works like a charm. Power windows, locks, and electric folding side mirrors are all in good working order. For outdoorsy types, you can unfurl the rear window to give your passengers a real open-air experience. The rear bench is versatile. Unlike our US market examples, this one has the option to slightly recline, and it can split-fold into a flat loading surface if you need more cargo space. The door cards have resisted the rigors of daily wear and tear, and the same can be said for the carpets and headliner. That’s not to say this is a perfect cabin, as 25 years of use have yielded some wear to the steering wheel. Still, the condition is in far above average shape, and the owner’s manuals and maintenance booklets have been retained for good measure!
Mechanical Overview
The 5VZ-FE under the hood is a legendary engine and it can go for nearly forever. This one is fresh off a tune-up by our trained technicians, and this 3.4L churns to life care of a new 12v battery. It runs smoothly, thanks to a new engine air filter and a new fuel filter. The V6 is mated to a stout automatic transmission that shifts just as it should. The selective 4WD allows the driver to shift between 2WD and 4WD on the fly. For low traction scenarios, a center locker can distribute power equally amongst all four wheels, and a low range 4WD is on hand as well. The suspension was refreshed with new rear lower control arms, and the steering rack bushings were replaced to keep your power steering system direct and easy to handle. The truck rides nicely now and can handle all the rigors of daily use and abuse. The ABS brakes feel confident, thanks to new front pads, and 4 new Falken All-Terrain tires have been mounted and balanced at each corner. The beefy rubber quiets down the road noise and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come, and this Surf was freshly aligned here. Turn key, ready to roll, this Surf is the truck to make you feel whole!
