Exterior Overview
What the market needs, now more than ever, are real-deal honest SUV’s. This Hilux Surf is as good as they come, as this 1999 has withstood the rigors of daily use and abuse overseas, yet still retains a squeaky clean frame, and a durable driveline, that’s shared with our domestic 4Runners. It’s also easy on the eyes, and this Millennium Silver Metallic (K73) example is adorned with an optional spare tire swingarm, OEM rainguards, privacy tint, a factory rear spoiler, and some freshly refinished factory 16″ alloys. Aside from some light dings, chips, and scuffs, the paint is in fine shape and this SSR-X is fresh off a recent service. Offered with only 117k verified and documented miles on the clock, this RZN185 is turn key and ready to roll. Perfect for use as a daily driver, year round family hauler, or fun weekend warrior, this Japanese Classic won’t break the bank and will only go up in value from here!
Interior Overview
The interior is in wonderful shape and was clearly cared for in Japan. Unlike many of these N185s, the dashboard has escaped Japan without any cracking, although there is some minor distortion around the glovebox area. Dual SRS airbags are standard and mounted up front for the driver and passenger. A Pioneer radio upgrade modernizes the cabin, and works like a charm. A modern audio upgrade is simple too, if you need to have your own tunes. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. To make daily use more enjoyable, power windows, locks, power mirrors, and keyless entry all work in typical Toyota fashion. The automatic digital climate control system is easy to use, and blows piping hot heat and cold A/C through the cabin. If you prefer more natural ventilation the rear glass powers down into the hatch. The tan cloth seats are in good nick and lack any major rips, stains or tears. The same can be said for the door cards, carpet and headliner which have withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse. All in all, it’s hard to critique this cabin condition. It was cared for in a prior life, and looks like a million bucks!
Mechanical Overview
This body on frame brute is a tough cookie and so is the 2.7l that powers it. The 3RZ-FE is fresh off an oil and filter service and turns over with haste. One of our trained technicians replaced a leaky distributor o-ring, and all new accessory belts were installed to keep this I4 running tip-top. The 2.7L pulls hard to redline and power is fed through a stout automatic gearbox. We topped off the fluid level for good measure, and it makes good use of the 3RZ’s powerband. This Hilux accelerates nicely and is peppy about town. To maximize fuel economy, the Surf can send power to the rear axle alone, but when additional grip is needed, the driver can switch over to 4WD on the fly from inside the cabin. The optional center locker allows power to be fixed 50/50 front and rear and a low range 4WD setting is available for the nastiest road conditions. New front lower control arms were installed to bolster the suspension, and we also installed brand new shocks in the front to firm up the ride quality. The suspension can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse and the ABS brakes feel capable and confidently slow this sled down. The power steering is light yet on point and traction comes from 31″ Falken all terrains, which are knee deep in tread. Last but not least, a fresh alignment was performed. This super Surf is well maintained, clean, and ready for whatever you throw at it!
