Exterior Overview
The 2nd generation Hilux Surf is a sporty, durable, and a blast to drive for an SUV. The light curb weight and punchy 3.0L turbodiesel make a perfect match, and this 1993 is fresh off a recent service, with a verified and documented 80k miles on the clock. Finished in Dark Blue Pearl (8E3), this rig is set off by OEM front rainguards, chrome door handles, chrome mirror caps, a spare tire swingarm, and a set of contrasting gold 15″ aftermarket alloys. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the paint is in good shape, and this Japanese Classic is turnkey and ready to roll! Perfect for adventurous types, off-road purists, and families on the go, this reliable and capable vehicle can do it all! Efficient, powerful, and easy to service, this terrific Toyota is one of the brand’s most enduring designs.
Interior Overview
The cabin is in excellent condition and was clearly cared for in Japan. It seems most of the N130 Hiluxes have cracked dashboards, but this example has held up well and remained unscathed. Pilots of all sizes can find the ideal seating position courtesy of a tilt-adjustable steering column. Adjustable lumbar support and an adjustable hip inflator keep the driver from sloshing about when driving spiritedly. The center stack is close by and includes a simple-to-use climate system. The heat and A/C work like a charm. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the side windows and rear glass power down to provide a gentle breeze. Below the aforementioned climate system is a Mitsubishi radio. It pipes in the tunes to supplement the turbodiesel soundtrack emanating from under the hood. To make daily use more enjoyable, power locks and power mirrors are on hand. The seats are trimmed in a durable gray cloth and in great shape. The rear row can split-fold, 4-way recline, and tumble forward to create a flat loading floor. The headliner and carpets have resisted major wear over the years, and as a whole the cabin condition is quite impressive!
Mechanical Overview
Equally impressive is the 1KZ-TE engine. Known for its toughness, fuel economy, and low-end grunt, these powerplants are incredible. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the four-banger churns to life with a twist of the key courtesy of two new 12V batteries and a rebuilt starter. A new fuel filter and engine air filter were chucked in as soon as it got onto the lift, and one of our trained techs then replaced the valve cover gasket, as it had begun to leak. A new lower radiator hose was installed, and we performed a coolant flush, too. So that all the accessories would remain properly powered, a set of new accessory belts were installed. The 1K is linked to a stout automatic that shifts as it should. The driver can toggle between 2WD and 4WD on the fly, and for low traction scenarios, a low range 4WD can be utilized. A new front passenger CV axle assists in putting down the power to the pavement. It hustles up to highway merging speeds and is a competent freeway cruiser. It rides like a dream, as we have heavily refreshed the suspension here in the US. Four new shocks were installed, and the front end was rehabilitated with new front upper and lower ball joints and front lower control arms. A new idler arm and pitman arm went in, and the worn rear upper and lower control arms were ditched for new units. New inner and outer tie rods were installed so we could dial in the proper alignment, and new front sway bar end links were replaced so this Surf could pass its state safety inspection. We mounted and balanced new 31″ Falken rubber at each corner, and the power steering system was rehabbed with a rebuilt pump, and new fluid was flushed in. It tracks straight as an arrow and is ready for an immediate road trip!
