Exterior Overview
Americans seem to abuse their SUVs. Logging tons of miles through the mud and snow, it’s no wonder 4Runner buyers flock to the Japanese equivalent, the Hilux Surf. This 1999 is offered with only 137k verified and documented miles, and is fresh off a recent service. A top trim model, this SSR-G was spec’d with the most desirable engine, the intercooled 1KZ-TE. This powerplant makes gobs of torque, boasts 50% better fuel economy and is an absolute torque monster. The handsome exterior deserves some praise, too, with its sport hood, aggressive OEM rear spoiler, refinished factory alloys, OEM rainguards, and rare factory front bumper valence. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the Millennium Silver (K73) paint is in good shape and this rig would show well at the beach or a local Cars & Coffee. Safe and capable enough to be a dedicated family hauler, this truck would also serve as a clean base for a dedicated overland build. Efficient, collectible, and cool, this off road icon is a certified Japanese Classic!
Interior Overview
The cabin is logically laid out and has a few nice electric amenities and safety features. The latter of which, in the form of standard dual SRS airbags and ABS, are no-cost equipment included in every 3rd generation Surf. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and the center stack is intuitively designed, so the controls are easy to reach. The digital automatic climate system is easy to use and blasts piping hot heat and cold A/C when necessary. Below, a touchscreen Kenwood head unit pipes in the tunes to supplement your commute. Daily use is made more manageable thanks to functional power folding side mirrors, power widows, and power locks. Even the rear hatch glass powers down to accommodate larger cargo. The driver benefits from a tilt adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. Rear occupants benefit from four way reclinable seating. The tan upholstery lacks any major rips, stains, or tears and is in good nick. The matching material is found in the door cards which have resisted major abuse over the years. The headliner is clean and held tight and taut to the roof and the carpets lack any major wear. Aside from some minor bolster wear on the driver’s seat cushion, it’s really hard to nitpick this cabin, and this Surf was clearly cared for overseas.
Mechanical Overview
This body on frame beast is a tough little truck and so is the 1KZ-TE under the hood. Fresh off an oil and filter service, including a new fuel filter, the 3.0L churns to life care of two new 12v batteries. For good measure, we also chucked in a new engine air filter. The 1K pulls hard to redline and creates tons of low down torque. It’s linked to a stout automatic that shifts properly and is geared better than the manual on the interstate. The pilot can choose between 2WD and 4WD on the fly and the selectable transfer case even has a low range and center locker on hand if you plan to play in the mud. The suspension is predictable and connected and offers loads of ground clearance. We refreshed it with new rear lower control arms and front sway bar links and then performed a fresh alignment. The redone OEM wheels are wrapped in brand new Falken rubber. They quell road noise and will provide tens of thousands of miles of grip to come. The brakes feel confident and new front pads and rotors help to reel this Surf in from higher speeds. The power steering is direct, and this rig tracks straight as an arrow.
