Built on the Altezza chassis, but sharing the same luxurious styling and amenities as our beloved Lexus-derived models, the Progres is the greatest Toyota daily you never knew existed!

Exterior Overview

Built on the Altezza chassis, but sharing the same luxurious styling and amenities as our beloved Lexus-derived models, the Progres is the greatest Toyota daily you never knew existed! It looks quirky but is built like a tank, and with only  80k verified and documented miles on the ticker our 1998 NC250 is just getting broken in. Finished in Ebony Teal Pearl (6N9), this Progres is set off by OEM rainguards and is in good shape cosmetically, showing just a few scuffs, swirls, and dings from daily use. Boasting a tidy tan leather interior, this is a whole lot of Toyota for your buck, and just about the best Japanese Classic you can get for under ten grand!

Interior Overview

The interior is a talking point of the Progres, and if we’re being frank, it’s a whole lot better than most things rolling off the assembly line in 1998. The previously mentioned tan cowhides are in good shape overall, and both driver and passenger benefit from power-adjustable seating. For safety-conscious occupants, dual SRS airbags are present up front and in the sides of the seats, and the driver can adjust the power tilt and telescoping steering column at will to get comfortable behind the wheel. With executive car roots, this Progres features plenty of hidey holes to stash away your belongings, while still keeping ample room for the necessities, like digital dual zone climate control, and premium OEM audio. Both cold A/C and hot heat are on standby to supply the cabin, and all four power windows are automatic if you need to let in a fresh breeze. The power locks cycle on and off thanks to keyless entry, and the mirrors can fold in electronically if needed. The rear bench offers ample space for additional passengers despite this sedan’s compact dimensions, and the trunk has enough room to stow some sizable luggage. The headliner is tidy, and the carpets are protected by OEM mats, which show a few stains but are in decent condition overall. It’s hard to gripe with the condition of this Progres.

Mechanical Overview

Stout and dependable, Toyota’s 1JZ-GE is a great pairing for this chassis and our customers praise these little inline sixes for their driving characteristics. Ours has a few maintenance items already buttoned up and has passed its Virginia State Safety Inspection with flying colors. To start, we chucked in a new 12v battery to aid ignition. This 2.5 cranks over with haste, and settles into a smooth idle after we got the oil and filter service up to date. Some beneficial preventative maintenance was also performed here in the shop. We installed a new timing belt, and replaced the cam seals and front main seal to nip some of the more pesky oil leaks in the bud. This Progres runs like a top, but we did want to note the valve cover gaskets and oil pan gasket have some noted leaks and will need to be addressed in the future. Also of note, the ABS light is on and the traction control has been disabled. For now, this Progres runs right as rain, and it handles daily duty like a champ. An automatic gearbox is the perfect mate for this luxury compact, and the drivetrain assumes a proper rear-driven architecture as well. The suspension is soft yet compliant, and to keep you safe on the road the front lower ball joints and front caster arm bushings were replaced with new units. The Dunlop rubber is knee-deep in tread at all four corners, and should last for a good while to come. A 25 year old Toyota is a surefire bet for daily use, and this Progres might be the brand’s best kept secret!
