Exterior Overview
The 80’s and 90s saw the last of a dying breed. Real, truck-based SUVs were much more common, and this 1995 Surf is a fine example of a tenaciously tough truck. Finished in a menacing one-off Badlands Black, this Hilux is set off by white refinished OEM alloys, an OEM rear spoiler, privacy tint, a factory spare tire swing arm, and OEM rainguards. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs the paint is in good shape and this SSR-X is fresh off a recent service. Comfortable enough to be a daily driver, and gutsy enough to take off the beaten path, this Japanese Classic is highly versatile. Whether you value performance, reliability, or low cost of ownership, this 2nd generation Surf will tick all the boxes!

Interior Overview
Toyota’s designs from this era are simple and straightforward. This one appears a bit more modern thanks to some upgrades. A set of snazzy leather seat covers deliver an upscale feel and protect the cloth below against spills or stains. A touchscreen Panasonic headunit looks more modern, too, and sounds great. Even better it includes Bluetooth hands-free tech and some US radio frequencies. This Surf has all the basic amenities like power locks, power rear glass, electric mirrors, and power windows. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. A Nardi steering wheel adds a sporty aesthetic and feels perfect in the palms of your hands. The rear occupants can ride in comfort too, with 4-way reclining rear seat backs. The rear row also tumbles forward to fold flat creating a large cargo area. A simple-to-use climate system allows those within the cockpit to cool down or heat up depending on their preference. So that the next summer won’t be a scorcher, we did replace the A/C compressor with a new unit! The headliner and door cards are in good shape and the carpets have withstood the past 25 years without. Aside from a few dash cracks and an intermittently inoperable speedometer which doesn’t allow us to verify mileage, it’s hard to complain about the cabin.

Mechanical Overview
Simple in its construction, this robust body-on-frame SUV is complimented by an equally hearty engine, the 1KZ-TE. Thanks to two brand new 12v batteries, the Surf chugs to life with the twist of the key. A fresh oil and filter service was performed and a new engine air filter, and new fuel filter were taken care of as soon as it got onto the lift. We refreshed the 3.0L with a new valve cover gasket and half moon seal so that the oil level would remain on full. New serpentine belts replace the old ones to keep your onboard electronics running tip-top. A coolant flush was performed to maintain proper thermal management, and a professionally rebuilt ECU assists with this four-banger’s seamless operation. It should be noted there is a lifetime transferrable warranty on the ECU repair! The 1K’s linked to a stout automatic gearbox that is linked to a selectable transfercase. Shifts feel reassured and the driver can choose between 2WD or 4WD. For snowy roads or the occasional beach day, low-range 4WD can be engaged. Acceleration is impressive and this powertrain is a lot more powerful than the gas V6 option sold in the US. It’s also a lot for frugal on fuel. For state inspection, we replaced the front idler arm. The suspension feels predictable and can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. The brakes are confident and slow this midsize Yota down in a hurry. The power steering is direct and a new steering stabilizer improves the road feel. To round out the reconditioning, brand-new Falkens were mounted and balanced at each corner. They look aggressive, quell road noise, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
