Exterior Overview
When we get a special Surf in, it doesn’t typically last that long around these parts. This 1998 SSR-X is just such a rig, with its fire-breathing intercooled diesel powerplant, center locker, and fresh coat of Island Blue (C2M) paint. Adorned by an OEM spare tire swingarm, OEM projector fogs, scooped hood, and stylish rear spoiler, it looks the part, and drives even better! Aside from a few minor imperfections, the body is in good nick, and this terrific Toyota is fresh off a recent service. Offered with only 95k verified and documented miles on the clock, this baby is barely broken in, and this highly efficient and torquey 3.0L has loads of life left in it! Ideal as a year-round family hauler, cool campsite companion, or brash-looking beach cruiser, this truck truly does it. Safe, capable, reliable, and easy on the eyes, it’s no surprise that this Japanese Classic is our best-selling platform!
Interior Overview
The cabin is in good nick and is filled with decent quality materials and electric amenities. The view up front is clear thanks to the tall ride height, skinny pillars, and low-lying dashboard. Dual SRS airbags are standard, and the dashboard lacks any cracking, fading, or warping. The driver can find the ideal driving position with a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. The gray cloth seats are in above-average shape, aside from some tiny tears on the driver seat bottom. The rest of the material lacks any major rips, stains, or tears and is mirrored in the door cards, which are in equally good nick. The rear row also 4 way reclines for optimal rear seat comfort, and it can also tumble forward and create a flat loading floor large enough to catch a catnap in! The center stack is close by and easy to reach if you happen to be piloting this rig. The digital automatic climate control is easy to operate and doles out ice-cold A/C and piping hot heat when required. A new A/C compressor was installed so that this summer stays as chill as can be! Below, a brand-new BOSS radio was installed by our team. Modern looking, it’s also Bluetooth equipped, so you can keep your eyes safely on the road, and the sound quality is above average. The steering wheel shows little to no wear, and the headliner and carpets have withstood the past quarter century without sustaining major abuse. Power windows, locks, and mirrors all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable, and factory keyless entry makes getting into the cabin seamless. The rear glass also powers down for additional airflow and convenience while loading cargo. Even the OEM carpet mats are included with the purchase of this stellar Toyota.
Mechanical Overview
The most desirable performance powerplant was selected for this truck from the factory, the intercooled 1KZ-TE. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the zippy little mill springs to life care of a new 12V battery. It idles with confidence, thanks to a brand new alternator and new accessory belts, which keep the 3.0 running tip top. A new fuel filter and engine air filter were chucked in for good measure. The 1K is linked to a stout automatic gearbox that sends power through a selectable transfer case. RWD can be engaged alone to deliver top-tier acceleration and fuel economy, but 4WD can be dialed in on the fly. Best of all, this example was equipped with a prized center locking differential. Couple that with an aggressive low-range 4WD gearing, and this truck is nearly unstoppable on less-than-ideal road surfaces. One of our trained techs has fully refreshed the suspension for the new American owner. New rear shocks, new front sway bar links and bushings, and new rear upper control arms were installed while on the lift. A fresh alignment was dialed in, ensuring the Toyota drives straight as an arrow and brand new 31″ Falken tires last as long as possible. The ABS brakes feel confident as we replaced the front calipers, pads, and rotors. The power steering is easy to articulate and responsive for a truck. Turn key and ready to rock, this special Surf checks all the boxes.
