Exterior Overview
There’s a lot to love about the R34 Skyline outside of its prominence in car culture. For those looking for a dependable daily driver or fun weekend cruiser, this 1998 coupe could be quite rewarding. Parts are easy to source, the aesthetics stand out, and the 92k miles on the clock are verified and documented. It’s a looker too, finished in a classy one-off Aubergine Metallic and set off by a sleek rear wing, OEM rainguards, Xenon headlamps and 17″ Regamasters. There are a few light paint imperfections sure, and there was a front right fender replacement noted in Japan, but this two-door is in good shape overall and should satisfy most any enthusiast. Best of all, the turbo manual drivetrain is hard to beat, and is a much better pairing for the chassis than the N/A automatic setup it left the production line with. A perfect blank canvas, garage queen, or even a useful day-to-day commuter, we keep finding reasons to love and cherish these Japanese Classics!
Interior Overview
The cabin feels more modern than other Skylines that preceded it, which is good news overall. We’d argue this R34 feels on par with most early 2000’s Nissan’s too, and has the power and safety equipment to back that up. Dual SRS airbags are present up front, and are housed in a redesigned, more ergonomic dashboard. The center stack is angled towards the driver and features an easy-to-use digital climate control system. Heat and Cold A/C are on hand in case the new owner plans to daily drive the this coupe year round. Pioneer audio lies adjacent and is nifty if you need to pump some tunes into the cabin as it reaches some US FM stations. Both power windows go up and down with haste, and the power locks and electric folding side mirrors work well to boot and aid daily use tremendously. The rear seat area is roomy enough to shove a kid or two in the back, and the remaining upholstery is in good nick from the headliner to the carpets beneath. It’s hard to find much to complain about with this clean and classic cabin, aside from some light peeling on the radio trim and door switches, but that’s truly nitpicking a 26 year old interior.
Mechanical Overview
The RB25DET under the bonnet is great for a lot of reasons. It’s a widely supported platform, which means parts are easy to source. It’s also fun to drive, and most importantly it’s fresh off a recent service here in house. Boasting NEO VVL technology, this 2.5l is fresh off an oil and filter service, and the lubricant is kept at bay with a new valve cover gaskets installed up top. New spark plugs were installed across the board to aid ignition, and keep this RB running tip top. As you’d expect, this R34 pulls hard to redline and shifts through the 5 speed gearbox are responsive and easy to navigate. Power is shot rearward, and brand new Fortune Auto coilovers were installed to keep you planted to the pavement. The power steering is light and direct, and the rear brake pads were replaced to bolster the factory ABS system. The Regas sport fresh Falken rubber, which not only looks good, but should deliver traction when needed most. A unique, standout version of one of this year’s most popular sport coupes, this R34 is a fine investment and a great addition to any collection!
