Here's a new take on an iconic family hauler. The first generation Honda Odyssey made waves when it landed stateside, and was one of the first true minivans as we know it. Our 1998 sports a factory high roof option, and has managed to log an impressive 35k miles since rolling off the production line 25 years ago. Finished in Taffeta White, the exterior has held up well over the years. Although the clearcoat is failing and there are some light age-related chips, dings, and scuffs along the exterior, this RA3 is in good shape overall. OEM rainguards and a rear mirror spruce up the outside a bit, and the factory steel wheels and covers have still remained in great shape. Nearly identical to our stateside models, but with the Japanese flair to turn the head of any discerning Honda enthusiast, this glass-top Odyssey is nothing less than a certified Japanese Classic.
The interior offers cavernous head and legroom, comfortable materials, and enough power amenities to keep the whole family satisfied. Trimmed in a durable tan cloth, the upholstery has withstood the last 25 years on the road with no serious imperfections to note. Some light staining is present here and there which is to be expected, but overall we are impressed with the condition of the seats as a whole. The middle bench reclines so your passengers can catch some shut-eye if need be, and the third row can stow flat into the floor in case you need to prioritize cargo space. Power windows work as advertised, alongside power locks and power mirrors, and a power moonroof can rapidly retract up front to funnel some additional ventilation into the cabin. The dash is in good nick and includes dual SRS front airbags. The lower portion houses functional OEM audio and dual-zone climate control. Both front and rear passengers can adjust the temperature of the cabin at will, and cold A/C and hot heat are on hand to dial in the perfect setting for all. The headliner, door cards, and carpet underneath are clean and free of any unwanted defects, and the large panoramic glass in the rear is perfect for any passengers looking to do a little late-night stargazing on a road trip. Overall, there's not much to gripe with inside this van, aside from the nonfunctional power folding mirror function, and in this condition, it's ready for another successful couple of decades on the road.
Perhaps the biggest selling point of this van is its tried and true drivetrain, which was conveniently offered in our Odysseys here in the USA. This makes parts and servicing a walk in the park, and the 2.3l four banger under the hood cranks over with no issues care of a new 12v battery installed here in house. To keep this van well lubricated, a new valve cover gasket was installed up top, and a fresh oil and filter service was performed to get maintenance up to par for the road ahead. A new fuel filter protects the F23A from contaminants and the result is a brilliantly zippy VTEC powerplant that delivers plenty of power and torque for both city and interstate driving. Power is sent to the front wheels through a smooth-shifting automatic transmission and this one gets up to speed without issue. The suspension is comfortable over road imperfections large and small, and the brakes can bring this one to a screeching halt if a traffic jam arises. Further aiding comfort and grip, we've wrapped the factory wheels in new all-season rubber, sure to help out tremendously year-round!
