The Pajero has a legendary reputation, and an off-road pedigree as good as any Ute out there. This 1998 is a special Mitsubishi, boasting a punchy direct injection powerplant, selective 4WD, and looks that can kill! Finished in a new coat of Summit White (W09), this stylish three-door is set off by a sporty OEM rear spoiler, factory rainguards, and an OEM brushguard with a newly integrated custom LED lightbar. Aside from a few light imperfections, the paint shows nicely, and this recently serviced rig is offered with a scant 59k verified and documented miles on the clock. Surefooted and practical, these Mitsubishi's make for fabulous daily drivers, unique adventure mobiles, and cool weekend cruisers. Affordable, reliable, and inexpensive to maintain, this SUV is a certified Japanese Classic.
The cabin was well cared for in Japan and included several optional amenities and safety items. The dashboard lacks any age-related distortion or cracking and houses dual front SRS airbags. Outward visibility is decent thanks to this rig's tall ride height and skinny pillars. The seats are trimmed in a textured and soft tan and blue cloth. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears and are comfortable on longer cruises. The rear stadium seats sit higher than the front buckets and are also in good nick, and can be folded out of the way to accommodate larger cargo. Power windows, door locks, and electric folding mirrors make daily use more enjoyable and work like a charm. This Pajero touts the rare optional power moonroof which lets in a light breeze and opens up the cabin with abundant natural light. The optional digital climate control is intuitive to use and can cycle cool and warm air through the cabin based on the occupants' preferences. An aggressive-looking Field Monitor delivers vehicle information to the driver, although the exterior temperature gauge is no longer working nor is the audio head unit. On the positive side the door cards, carpets, and headliner have rested major abuse over the years, and even the factory owners manual is included in the sale.
Tough and stout, these body-on-frame platforms are known to withstand hundreds of thousands of miles and many years of abuse. While this statement has always been true for Pajero's, we haven't always heard folks rave about the on-road performance and driveline. That all changed for the late 1997 and newer gas-powered versions, as they feature a reworked direct injected 3.5L for propulsion which powers this example. This V6 is fresh off an oil and filter service and starts up with the twist of the key thanks to a new 12v battery we installed here in the shop. The six-cylinder pulls strong to redline and benefits from a new engine air filter and new fuel filter. Power is fed through a slick-shifting automatic and powers two or all four wheels. If the going gets tough or a beach excursion is in order, a locking center differential and low-range 4WD can be engaged. This little terror is seemingly unstoppable off the beaten path but is just as good on the pavement. One of our trained techs has replaced both rear shocks and now the Pajero feels predictable and smooth. It gobbles up potholes and takes large road imperfections with utter confidence. The ABS brakes are capable of reeling in this truck from higher speeds, and the power steering is light and easy to articulate. Lastly, we mounted and balanced four 31" Falkens on the refinished aftermarket wheels. The new rubber not only reduces the road noise but will provide tens of thousands of miles of premium year-round grip to come.
