Exterior Overview
Looking for your next family heirloom? Look no further. The 100 series Land Cruiser is designed to be passed down from generation to generation, and this 1998 VX-Limited has a lot to love. It’s finished in a one-off Black Amber Metallic, and set off by OEM rainguards, a one-off dual exhaust, and menacing privacy tint. 17″ ICON Rebound wheels complete the aesthetic, and new 34″ Falken rubber gives this Cruiser the bad boy look that everyone wants. Best of all, the 139k verified and documented miles suggest it’s barely broken in, as most of our stateside examples have tallied well into the 2 and 300,000 miles at this point. Save for a few minor blemishes in the paintwork, the cosmetics are in good shape overall, yet not too nice to pummel through a muddy trail. Ideal as a plush and poised commuter, but rugged enough to take into the backcountry. This is a Japanese Classic in every essence of the term!
Interior Overview
Toyota built these trucks to take a lickin and keep on tickin, and the same can be said for the interior, too. Able to withstand the rigors of daily use and abuse, this J100 boasts top-tier build quality, additional safety features, and a handful of power amenities and appointments to simplify daily driving. The doors close with a confident thud, and surprisingly very little road noise is transmitted into the cabin. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and electric lumbar support, making long road trips much more bearable. The center stack is close by and within arm’s reach. At the top, an Alpine touchscreen headunit resides and is primed to pipe in some tunes. It includes Bluetooth integration so you can keep your eyes safely on the road ahead. The automatic climate control system below is intuitive to operate and doles out ice-cold air conditioning and piping hot heat when called upon. If you prefer more natural ventilation, a large power moonroof tilts and retracts, the side glass powers down, and the rear quarter glass butterflies outward to supplement air flow. Other electric niceties that make daily use more enjoyable include functional cruise control, power folding mirrors, and power locks. The dashboard does have some light discoloration and tiny hairline cracks in the center, and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. The gray cloth seats are in fair shape and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The middle row can split-fold and slide forward to accommodate larger cargo. The carpets are in good shape aside from some light damage in the cargo area, and the headliner and door cards have withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse.
Mechanical Overview
For such a refined and luxurious SUV, you need a powerplant to match. A welcome upgrade from the wheezing I6’s found in previous generations, the 2UZ-FE is a worthy candidate, and with a bevy of services performed by our trained technicians, this is a turn-key cruiser ready for your daily escapades. For starters, a new 12v battery was installed, and we kept the charging system on the up and up by installing a new alternator too. For those who value preventative maintenance, we’ve gone ahead and refreshed the UZ with a new timing belt and water pump. While the engine was torn down, we replaced the front main seal and valve cover gaskets, and performed a coolant flush and oil and filter service. Also installed were eight new spark plugs to aid combustion and a new fuel filter. An aftermarket catback exhaust helps the V8 purr, and the powerband is predictable and strong, as you would expect. An automatic gearbox throws power to all four wheels, benefits from a new front differential mount, and for those looking to wheel this truck on loose surfaces or up steep grades, low gearing and center locking is available. Our service wasn’t limited to just the engine, and we installed new rear upper and lower control arms, new swaybar bushings, and endlinks all the way around. Our most extensive service was to the power steering system, where we rebuilt the steering rack with new seals. New inner and outer tie rods were installed upon reassembly, and we flushed the system with new fluid. A fresh alignment was performed to keep this 4×4 tracking straight, and to prolong tire life on the brand new 34″ rubber. Lastly, we installed new front and rear brake pads to bolster the standard ABS system. With tons of good, costly preventative maintenance performed, and a bulletproof chassis, this Cruiser can take on literally anything you throw at it!
