Fun to drive and capable too, this intercooled Hilux Surf diesel is hard to beat. Known for its superior on and off-road performance and the longevity of the powertrain, this 1998 just might be the perfect SUV. Finished in a Stellar Blue over Magnetic Gray two tone, this SSR-X is set off by a set of 16" aftermarket alloys, OEM rainguards, privacy tint, and an OEM spare tire swingarm. Aside from a few light chips, dings, and scuffs this five-seater is no worse for the wear and fresh off a recent service. clocking only 136k verified and documented miles, this Toyota is barely broken in. Perfect for the beach, dropping the progeny off at school, or cruising on the weekend, this Surf is a true Japanese Classic in every sense of the term.
The cabin layout is simple, yet still nicely equipped. The dashboard which is prone to distortion is in good shape and lacks any cracking or warping. Dual SRS airbags are standard for those riding up front and add some additional peace of mind when behind the wheel. The driver has the ability to get comfortable thanks to a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. Power windows, door locks, and electric mirrors are all standard and work like a charm. The climate control system is mounted in the center stack and is simple to use. The automatic function is perfect for finding the desired cabin temperature and cold A/C and piping hot heat can be dialed up when needed. The seats are upholstered in a soft Moon Mist and Gray cloth combination. Aside from some bolster wear by the driver's door, they are in above-average shape and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The headliner is in good shape as are the door cards but we did want to mention some light carpet staining and the lack of a headunit, although your local audio shop should be able to remedy the later in a jiffy. Still, at 25 years old, the condition is impressive and this Hilux was obviously cared for in Japan.
The same body on frame platform under this Surf is shared with the US 4Runner. This makes modifications and service inexpensive and easy to source. The real star of this N185 is the intercooled 1KZ-TE engine. The 3.0L is fresh off an oil and filter service and turns over with a twist of the key. So that you don't get stranded for the winter ahead, one of our trained techs has installed two new 12v batteries to aid ignition. A new engine air filter and fuel filter will work to maximize your miles per gallon and new serpentine belts keep any seeps at bay from underneath the bonnet. The four banger has been additionally refreshed with a new valve cover gasket and front main seal, so the oil level stays on full. Power is sent through a smooth shifting automatic and can be fed to the rear or all four wheels. The off-road crowd will love the optional locking center differential setting for the transfercase. Low-range 4WD can also be engaged when the going gets tough. We shored up the driveline with a new output seal installed by one of our trained technicians. The suspension and running gear won't disappoint, either. Lots of ground clearance makes trails more manageable and the updated multilink suspension pays dividends on pavement. Large and small potholes are gobbled up with relative ease and the power steering is light yet on point. The ABS brakes bite down hard when called upon and aftermarket 16s are shod in new all-terrain 33" Falken rubber.
