Exterior Overview
From Colorado to Caracas to Calais, everyone seems to love the 4Runner/Hilux Surf universally. It’s capable, yes, but also easy to service, and is a handsome little sport utility. We sell hundreds of clean, low-mileage 4x4s each year, and this 1998 Hilux Surf is a great example of one of Toyota’s best-ever designs. Finished in a classic Toyota Black (204), the SSR-V trim is set off by a set of refinished OEM 16″ alloy wheels, OEM spare tire swingarm, OEM chrome door handles, bumpers, taillight surrounds, and mirror caps. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the paint is in fine shape, and this Hilux is fresh off a comprehensive service. Boasting a meager 101k verified and documented miles on the clock, this gasoline-powered rig is barely broken in. Tough, trustworthy, safe, and spacious, this Japanese Classic would make for a durable daily driver, wicked weekend wheeler, or anything in between. Collectable and cool cars are what we do, and this ride proves practicality, style, and substance need not break the bank!
Interior Overview
The cabin is simple, ergonomic, and includes some handy electric amenities. We love the stylized blue and charcoal colored upholstery. It is in good shape, showing no discernible rips, stains, or tears. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support, and those riding behind enjoy 4-way reclining rear seat backs. The rear seats also split-fold and tumble forward to accommodate larger cargo. The center stack is close by and within arm’s reach. A simple-to-use climate system pipes in ice-cold A/C and piping hot heat so this N185 can be enjoyed year round. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the side windows and rear hatch glass power down with the press of a button. Power mirrors and power locks also function, making daily use more enjoyable. The Japanese owner upgraded the radio to a touchscreen Kenwood head unit. It includes some American radio frequencies and Bluetooth hands-free integration. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. The door cards, headliner, and carpets have withstood the past quarter century without sustaining major abuse, and as a whole it’s clear this truck was cared for overseas. Even the owner’s manuals and maintenance booklets are included with the purchase of this trusty steed!
Mechanical Overview
The Hilux Surf is underpinned by durable, ladder-frame construction. The 3RZ-FE is a hearty little four-banger too, and has no problem adequately powering this midsize truck. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 2.7L springs to life courtesy of a new 12v battery and breathes freely thanks to a brand new air intake filter. To keep all of that fresh oil internal, one of our trained techs replaced the distributor O-ring seal with a new one. The Surf sends power through a stout automatic transmission. It shifts like a champ and benefits from a fresh fluid exchange. The pilot can choose between 2WD and 4WD on the fly, and a low range is on hand should traction be an issue. It gets up to highway speeds without breaking a sweat and is a comfortable cruiser with its long wheelbase. We refreshed the ride with new shocks all around. New front lower ball joints and front lower control arms were added while we were in there. Out back, we also replaced the rear upper and lower control arms for good measure. A new driver inner tie rod was installed before we aligned this truck to drive straight as an arrow. That would maximize the life of the brand new 31″ Falken tires. The power steering is light yet communicative for a truck, and ABS brakes are standard. To keep stopping distances short, we replaced the front brake pads and rotors and the rear drums and shoes. Turn key and ready to roll, this super Surf can’t be stopped!
