Exterior Overview
Bridging the gap between the 4Runner-equivalent Hilux Surf and the full-sized Land Cruiser 100, the J95 Prado occupies a position in the market that is highly coveted here in the US. Accommodating to our American lifestyles, yet built with the guts and grit of a real Japanese 4×4, this Land Cruiser TX is a hot commodity, and looks handsome in a stately Desert Dune Metallic/Gray (K03). Set off by an optional OEM front brushguard and skid plate, four prominent fog lamps, custom side graphics, OEM rainguards, and an optional hardshell tire cover, the cosmetics are simple yet striking, and this lovely Landy is offered with a mere 103k verified and documented miles on the clock. Refinished factory alloys round off the aesthetic, and this super SUV is fresh off a recent service! Turn-key ready, and sharing a drivetrain with 3rd generation 4Runner models, these Cruisers are easy to own, fun to wheel, and make for competent daily drivers. It may seem like we only have good things to say about these Prados, and for good reason. They’re bonafide Japanese Classics!
Interior Overview
Preceding the Lexus GX model here in the states, the J95’s interior offers way more form and function than your average Surf or 4Runner. It comes with an optional stowable third row, a safer cabin structure, and increased head and legroom to make sure road tripping is a stress free affair. The driver can settle in behind a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and the switchgear is at hand and easy to operate, and is integrated nicely into the center stack. An automatic climate control unit can dial in cold A/C to both front and rear zones, hot heat up front, and an adjacent OEM TV/Radio works well although the display is a bit hazy. The dash materials are in good shape overall, with no excessive fading or distortion, and dual SRS airbags are present to give your front occupants some peace of mind. Comfort was clearly Toyota’s priority when designing this cabin, and the patterned cloth upholstery has a plush texture. Clearly cared for in a prior life, it lacks any major rips, stains, or tears, and coddles passengers nicely. To prioritize cargo space, the middle row can split fold and flip forward, and the third row is easy to deploy or remove completely. Power windows, locks, and mirrors work like a charm, and although the driver’s mirror no longer electronically folds, an expansive power moonroof more than makes up for it. All in all, it’s hard to find fault with this cabin. It’s clean, comfortable, and if you can see past a dim field monitor display and a non operational keyless entry remote, most folks will really love being in this cockpit! Even a spare key will be included with your purchase!
Mechanical Overview
Despite having a uniquely Japanese body, The 5VZ-FE under the hood is the same lovable 3.4 V6 powering our stateside 4Runners, which means this Prado is easily serviced with all the same parts. It’s fresh off an oil and filter service here at the shop, where we performed loads of great maintenance to get it ready to drive daily. A new 12v battery was tossed in to aid ignition, and we replaced the tired old engine air filter for a bit of a tune-up. Seasoned Toyota gurus will appreciate the freshly rebuilt ECU, as it carries a lifetime warranty and keeps this Prado running right as rain. It soars to highway speeds with ease, and a four speed automatic gearbox handles power delivery. Power is distributed amongst all four wheels via a full-time 4WD transfercase. For real-deal offroad types, a center locker and low range are on hand, and we installed new front wheel bearings to keep road noise in the cabin to a minimum. The suspension benefits from new front shocks, and we replaced a few normal wear items to help it ace state safety inspection. New front lower control arms and lower ball joints were installed, tackling some preventative maintenance. Easy to maneuver, the power steering benefits from a brand new pump and a full rack rebuild by one of our master technicians. After installing new seals, the rack was reassembled with new inner and outer tie rods, rack boots, and bushings. We then flushed the system with new fluid. The ABS brakes grab with confidence and we wrapped the factory alloys in fresh Falken rubber. Stylish and clean, this truck makes a statement, and after a fresh four wheel alignment, you’ll be set for tens of thousands of miles of comfortable cruising!
