Exterior Overview
The Hilux Surf is highly customizable, capable, and has a reputation for nearly bulletproof reliability. It’s also sold in many different iterations with three engine options, two gearboxes, and two different transfer cases to choose from. When this one rolled into the shop spec’d this way, we knew we had an enthusiast’s dream! This SSR-X is powered by an intercooled turbodiesel engine, underpinned by class-leading 4WD, and the new owner even gets to row their own gears, courtesy of a manual gearbox. This 1998 KZN185 Surf is also handsome, and is finished in a classic Tungsten Silver (AST1262). This rig is set off by refinished 16″ OEM alloys, brand new Eibach 2.5″ lift kit, a desirable OEM spare tire swingarm, OEM scooped hood, OEM optional front valence, and stylish OEM rear spoiler. Aside from a few light imperfections, the paint is in good shape, and this 4×4 is fresh off a recent service. Boasting a mere 114k verified and documented miles on the clock, this terrific Toyota is barely broken in. Fun to drive, efficient, powerful, and highly collectible, this Japanese Classic would make a killer daily driver, weekend cruiser, or overlanding all-star!

Interior Overview
The cabin is in good nick and has a few noted safety features and creature comforts that can be enjoyed. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard. The center stack is close by and within arm’s reach, and the ergonomics are quite good overall. One of our techs installed a Bluetooth-compliant USDM Boss radio, which pumps tunes throughout the cabin and keeps your eyes on the road. Above, a digital automatic climate control system doles out cold A/C and piping hot heat, and works like a charm. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and optional adjustable lumbar support. The rear occupants have 4-way reclining seat backs, so they don’t feel left out. The rear row can also tumble forward and fold flat, creating a large cargo loading area. The tan cloth lacks any major rips, stains, or tears, and the same matching material is mirrored in the door cards. The carpets and headliner are in good shape, as are the aforementioned door cards. Power windows, power locks, power windows and electric rear glass all work in typical Toyota fashion, which improves daily use. Aside from some flattening on the driver seat bolster, this cabin seems to be well cared for, and we think the new American owner will agree.

Mechanical Overview
The 1KZ-TE steals the show with its incredible torque profile, decent fuel economy, and ease of service. The 3.0L churns to life care of a new 12V battery, and we replaced the fuel filter and engine air filter so the four banger runs seamlessly. To ensure the oil level stays full, one of our trained techs replaced the leaking valve cover gasket and half moon seal with new ones. We also performed a fresh coolant flush, which should last the new owner 4 years. The four-banger is linked to a manual gearbox that gives the driver a level of control absent from the slushboxes. The driver can select between 2WD and 4WD on the fly, and a center locking differential and low range can be utilized for your off-road escapades. ABS brakes are standard, and new front rotors and pads reduce stopping distances. The suspension received a healthy refresh and numerous upgrades. New inverted Eibach shocks with 2.5-inch lift springs were added, and we took care of new front lower ball joints, rear upper and lower control arms, and installed new extended sway bar links and bushings. It drives like a dream and tracks straight as an arrow thanks to a fresh alignment. One of our technicians also rebuilt the power steering rack. New bushings, inner and outer tie rods, and a fresh fluid exchange ensure the steering stays smooth. The OEM 16″s have been refinished and wrapped in new 33″ Falken rubber. Turn key and ready to rock, this rig would be a killer daily driver, neat weekend overlander, or fun family shuttle.
