This trusty sport utility would make for a bonafide beach cruiser, fantastic family shuttle, and collectible campsite crawler. A Japanese Classic to the core, this terrific Toyota is a year-round hauler for the off-road baller!

Exterior Overview

Built to last, and inexpensive to maintain, the Hilux Surf dominates the midsize JDM SUV market. This 1997 is a fine example of the platform, and is powered by the same rugged V6 that was sold here domestically in our beloved 4Runner. Fresh off a recent service, this 4×4 is offered with a mere 96k verified and documented miles on the clock, which is a fraction of the use of most American third gens. Finished in a fresh coat of Mud Bath (4Z2), this SSR-G model is set off by an aggressive rear spoiler, OEM spare tire swingarm, refinished 16″ OEM wheels, an Ironman 4×4 lift, and some classy rear privacy tint. We wanted to note the driver fender was replaced in Japan, and other than a few light imperfections, the body is in good shape, and this five-seater is turn key and ready to rock. Interior Overview

The cabin is ergonomically designed and optioned well from the factory. This one includes optional automatic climate control, which is ideal for those living in seasonal climates. For those who prefer more natural ventilation, power windows, an electric sunroof, and electric rear glass all power open for a light breeze. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column to find the ideal driving position. Power folding mirrors, power locks, and a functional OEM radio work like a charm, making daily use more enjoyable. For the off-road crowd, an optional Field Monitor displays info on the outside conditions should you lose cell service. The door cards are in good shape, as is the headliner, and the carpet has only a few light stains of note. The tan seats are in good shape and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The middle row can split-fold and fold flat into the floor for added storage. Aside from some steering wheel wear and some dash distortion by the windshield base, it’s hard to critique this Surf’s interior, and it was clearly cared for overseas. It even includes the owner’s manuals and maintenance booklets, which are stored safely in the glovebox.

Mechanical Overview

The 5VZ-FE engine is a gem, known for its longevity, midrange punch, and ease of service. The 3.4L churns to life care of a new 12v battery and is fresh off an oil and filter service. Best of all, one of our trained techs refreshed this mill with a timing belt and water pump service, which includes all new coolant and a thermostat to boot. We also replaced the valve cover gaskets and half-moon seals to keep the oil level on full. Maximizing power and seeking improved fuel economy out of the engine is always our goal. New spark plugs, wires, a new engine air filter, and new fuel filter are all part of our in-house tune-up. We also replaced the alternator to keep the electronics properly powered. The quad cam powerplant is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. It shifts just like it should, and this rig gets up to highway speeds without breaking a sweat. It slows down impressively well, with new front brake pads and rotors installed up front and new drums and does out back. With ABS standard, this Toyota can handle the occasional dusting of snow or sleet. We refreshed the suspension a fair bit, adding a new Ironman 4×4 lift kit. Brand new upgraded axles and sway bar links were installed due to the lift, and we also replaced the front lower control arms and front lower ball joints. The ride quality is above average, and this truck easily passed its VA state safety inspection. To complete the reconditioning, we fully rebuilt the steering rack and added new rack bushings and inner and outer tie rods before an alignment. This Surf tracks straight as an arrow, and the 16″ wheels are wrapped in brand new 33″ Falken tires. Freshly aligned, this rig is ready to roll, and this example is about as complete as a Surf gets!
