Exterior Overview
An amazing midsize SUV option, the Hilux Surf is capable, dependable, and stylish. Its body-on-frame construction is a big reason why so many of these have stood the test of time, and a slate of reliable drivetrains are hard to fault. This 1997 SSR-X is a clean example and is fresh off a recent service. Offered with a mere 114k verified and documented miles on the clock, it’s logged a fraction of the use of most domestic 4Runners. Finished in a one-off Buckskin Black, this rig is set off by steel tail light covers, a matching front brushguard, refinished factory wheels, and OEM rainguards. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the paint is in fine shape overall. Perfect as a trustworthy family hauler, this terrific Toyota would be a cool campsite companion or decent dedicated overlander. A Japanese Classic that can do everything well, this safe, simple and sturdy sports utility won’t lead you astray.
Interior Overview
The cabin is in above-average shape and was cared for overseas. Upgrades include a touchscreen Panasonic headunit that pipes in some tunes to supplement your commute, with fully integrated backup camera and Bluetooth tech. Above the radio is a simple-to-use automatic climate control system. It blasts cold A/C and piping hot heat so the Surf can be utilized year-round. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. Pilots of all sizes can find the ideal driving position courtesy of a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. Rear occupants benefit from 4-way reclining seat backs that also split-fold and tumble forward to create a flat loading floor. Power windows, locks and mirrors all function in typical Toyota fashion. An optional field monitor is located by the map lights and displays information about the outside conditions should cell service be lost when exploring parts unknown. The seats are protected by fitted leather seat covers that add some upscale appeal. The door cards and headliner are in good nick, and aside from a few carpet stains and a non-functional moonroof, it’s hard to complain about the cabin. Even the owner’s manuals, maintenance booklets, and a cargo security cover are included in the purchase of the vehicle.
Mechanical Overview
The body on frame platform harkens back to an era when SUVs were truck-based. Current iterations of crossovers are typically car-based and offer little in the way of off-road capability. Easy to service, this Surf is powered by the same 3RZ-FE engine we received here in the US, under the hoods of various 4Runners and Tacomas. The 2.7L is fresh off an oil and filter service and churns to life with the twist of the key. A new engine air filter, spark plugs, and fuel filter were replaced as soon as it got on the lift. So that the 2.7L could handle the thermal load, a coolant flush was performed, which won’t be required for another four years. The powerplant is linked to an automatic transmission and sends torque through a selectable transfercase. The driver can toggle between 2WD and 4WD on the fly, and a low range can be engaged when loose surfaces present themselves. This Surf gets up to highway merging speeds with confidence and slows down promptly with its standard ABS. To improve the pedal feel, we replaced the front brake hoses and performed a brake fluid flush. The long wheelbase pays dividends for high speed stability, and one of our trained techs has refreshed the system completely. New rear shocks, rear swaybar links, new front ball joints, front sway bar links, and new front lower control arms were all swapped in prior to dialing in an alignment. The power steering is light yet communicative, and this Toyota tracks straight as an arrow. Before it left the shop, we installed brand new 31″ Falken tires at each corner. The new rubber quells road noise, looks mean, and should last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
