Toyota's 4Runners and Surfs are in so much demand today, no matter the year or the generation. This 1997 is a special truck, with is durable diesel and attractive styling. The cabin is ergonomic and full of power features and safety items. Dual SRS airbags are standard, adding some peace of mind for those who may be safety conscious. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and is in good nick. The center stack includes controls for the climate system and houses OEM audio. Both function properly and make daily driving more enjoyable. The same can be said for the power mirrors, electric side windows, and power locks. Even the rear hatch glass retracts, providing a breeze to those within the cabin. The Moon Mist upholstery is in good shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The middle row split folds, and tumbles forward to create a flat loading floor. The carpets, headliner, and door cards are in fair shape and this truck was clearly cared for overseas. The frame, suspension, and running gear are shared with our USDM models so parts and upgrades are readily available and can be had inexpensively. Under the hood, a beast of an engine rests, the 1KZ-TE. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L whirrs to life care of two new 12v batteries. Like all of the diesels we sell, a new fuel filter was swapped in as was a new engine air filter. The four-banger is linked to a stout automatic gearbox, Fresh off a fluid change, the transmission shifts properly and makes good use of the prodigious low-end grunt the 1K provides. Acceleration is impressive for an SUV of this vintage and for that, 2WD is the ticket. For low traction scenarios, 4WD can be engaged on the fly and a low range is available for the worst of the worst road conditions. The suspension is predictable and communicative, handling the rigors of daily use and abuse without breaking a sweat. The ABS brakes are confident feeling, and the power steering is light and on point. This truck drives straight as an arrow thanks to a fresh alignment and grip is handled by four new Falken 31" all terrains mounted and balanced at each corner.
