This 1997 J95 is the perfect compromise for folks looking for better fuel economy than the full-size Landys, who refuse to compromise on space and capability.
Exterior Overview
Through the 90’s and 2000’s here in the US, our Toyota showrooms sold heavy duty Land Cruisers exclusively. In Japan however, a medium duty chassis was available, and boy is it a good one! This 1997 J95 is the perfect compromise for folks looking for better fuel economy than the full-size Landys, who refuse to compromise on space and capability. Finished in a classic Blueish Silver Metallic over Gray (K02), this 4×4 is set off by refinished factory 16″ wheels, privacy tint, a rear hitch receiver, and a set of OEM rainguards. Aside from some minor dings, chips and scuffs, the paint is in good shape and this reliable rig is fresh off a recent service. Boasting a meager 94k verified and documented miles on the clock, this Japanese Classic is just getting broken in. Spacious and safe, this SUV would make for an incredible year-round daily driver, wicked weekend warrior, or fun family ferry. Affordable, distinctive, and an incredible overall value, this midsize sport utility is a do-it-all workhorse!
Interior Overview
The cabin is expansive, with plenty of headroom, legroom and shoulder room available for all. Drivers of all sizes can find the ideal seating position courtesy of a tilt-adjustable steering wheel. Power folding mirrors, power locks and power windows all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. We upgraded the audio to a BOSS USDM headunit that includes Bluetooth integration, too. Below, a simple to use automatic climate system can be utilized to cool or heat the cockpit. The dash lacks any cracking or fading and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. The seats are trimmed in a blue textured cloth. The material, which is mirrored in the door cards, lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The rear row can tumble forward to maximize cargo room and can also split-fold and 4-way recline. The headliner is in good shape and a functional moonroof lets in natural light and a light breeze. Aside from some blemishes on the door cards and a non-functional field monitor, it’s hard to complain about the cabin overall, as it was clearly cared for in a prior life! Even a set of spiffy carpet mats are included to jazz up the cockpit.
Mechanical Overview
The body on frame platform is robust, and the drivetrain is too. Power comes from the 3RZ-FE, which is fresh off an oil and filter service. This engine utilizes a hassle-free timing chain, and was sold here in the US, so parts sourcing is a snap. A new 12v battery was installed so it starts up the first time, every time. A new engine air filter was installed so that the four cylinder can breathe easy, and the 2.7L feels strong and sounds even better through a Vooz catback exhaust. The automatic gearbox shifts like a champ and sends torque through a Full-Time 4WD system. A center locker and low range are on hand should you encounter loose terrain. Touting a refined ride over pavement, the long wheelbase distributes road imperfections well. New front lower control arms were installed before this Prado aced its state safety inspection. ABS is standard, and we replaced the front brake hoses and performed a brake fluid flush to keep the pedal feel linear. The power steering is light, yet direct, and a new driver’s side inner tie rod was chucked in before we aligned this Toyota. New Falken All-Terrains were mounted and balanced at each corner, and this turn-key rig tracks straight, and is ready to take on tens of thousands more miles!
