Exterior Overview
If you are an American who is drawn to outdoor life and exploring our beautiful landscape, then you’ll likely need a rugged and reliable SUV or truck to match. Sadly, many options leave you lacking space and comfort, but alas, this Mitsubishi has you covered. Underpinned by a center locked 4WD system, this turbodiesel rig has room for all your friends, family, and gear. With a massive Crystal Lite roof, you can sleep under the stars in this lovely 1997 model. Finished in handsome Royal Blue Pearl Over Gray (T38/A37), this L400 is adorned with an OEM front bash bar with integrated amber foglamps, OEM side steps, an OEM rear nerf bar, and some Bridgestone Urban Sports alloys shod in 31″ all-terrain Falken tires. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the body is in good shape, and this trusty transporter is fresh off a recent service. Boasting only 95k verified and documented miles on the ticker, this turn-key ready ride can be put to task on an immediate road trip. Capable, unique, practical, and cool, this Japanese Classic would make for a killer overlander, dedicated daily driver, or collectible campsite crawler!

Interior Overview
The cabin for this Mitsubishi is cavernous. The flat loading floor is a key design feature that makes moving about the cabin easy, and the large frontal crash structure is ideal for those who might be safety-conscious. Also of note are the dual front SRS airbags, which add some peace of mind. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and a large OEM field monitor sits atop it. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column, and power locks, windows, and mirrors all work as they should, making daily use a breeze. The center stack is close by and within arm’s reach and features a digital auto climate control system and an OEM TV/Radio below. Both operate as they should, and the A/C system has its own rear control for those riding out back. If you prefer more natural ventilation, a large front moonroof tilts upward to supply fresh air to the cabin. The massive glass roof in the back has its own power sunshade covers and steals the show. The gray cloth seats are in good nick overall. Aside from a tear on the back of the rear seat, the material lacks any major rips, stains, or holes. The middle row can swivel to face the rear, and the rear bench can slide fore and aft to accommodate larger goods. The headliner and carpets are in fine shape and the door cards have held up well, too. The sliding rear door opens wide for easy loading and has a soft close function so that it wont drain your battery if left ajar. Aside from the rear dome light being out and a cracked inclinometer screen on the field monitor it’s hard to complain about the cabin and it was clearly cared for overseas in Japan.

Mechanical Overview
Known for being robustly constructed and able to handle loads of abuse, this L400 platform is universally loved. Featuring a longer wheelbase for an improved ride, and more interior room than its predecessor, these vans are much more passenger-friendly than the L300’s that preceded them. The 2.8l engine is also a winner. Fresh off an oil filter service, it churns to life courtesy of 2 new 12v batteries. A new fuel filter keeps unwanted contaminants out of the 4M40, and one of our trained techs also rehabbed the 2.8L with a new valve cover gasket and half moon seal. We also added a new coolant reservoir as the old unit was cracked. The four banger is linked to a stout automatic that makes good use of the prodigious amounts of low end torque supplied by the engine. Shifts feel reassured, and the SuperSelect 4WD system feels surefooted. The pilot can choose on the fly between 2WD and 4WD and for beach outings and snowstorms, a low range and center locking differential can be engaged. It’s peppy from stoplight to stoplight, and interstate cruising is comfortable, too. The suspension was improved with new rear swaybar links and bushings, and we also replaced the steering rack boots while we were in there. The van tracks straight as an arrow thanks to a fresh alignment, and the power steering is light and easy to articulate. It slows down with confidence and the front axle benefits from new pads and rotors. Grip comes from nearly new Falken rubber that is knee deep in tread, and with the maintenance performed, this fantastic overlander is turn-key ready for your next adventure!
