Exterior Overview
Toyota holds the 70 Series in such high esteem that they still produce it today, 43 years after its debut. The timeless styling, durable powertrain, and off-road DNA are all reasons why these rigs are so highly prized. This 1994 is adorned with lots of pricey upgrades, such as an Ironman 4×4 roof basket, Ironman 4×4 lift kit, Front Runner roof ladder, Method alloy wheels, an OEM bashbar, and OEM rainguards. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the Dark Green Mica (6M1) paint is in good shape, and this trusty truck is fresh off a recent service. Boasting a mere 134k verified and documented miles on the ticker, this turbodiesel beast is barely broken in. Enthusiasts, families on the go, and adventurous types will all love this Japanese Classic, and it would make for an ideal year-round daily driver or wicked weekend playtoy.
Interior Overview
The cabin is spacious and includes a few decent power amenities and upgrades. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjusting steering column with a slick MoMo steering wheel mounted atop it. The power windows, locks, and mirrors all work like a charm, making daily use more enjoyable. The center stack is close by and within arm’s reach. The simple-to-use controls pipe in cold A/C and piping hot heat. We replaced the A/C compressor while it was on the lift. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the rear quarter glass butterflies outward, and a massive power moonroof can retract for a view of the skies above. The Jensen audio is Bluetooth-compliant and sounds decent. With the optional third row, you can ferry around a few more bodies, and the gray and blue upholstery is in good shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The headliner and door cards are in fine shape, and the carpets have withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse. That’s not to say the cabin is perfect, as the dash cracks have been obscured by a carpet cover, and the driver’s seat has a homebrew fix to allow the driver to adjust the reclinable seat back.
Mechanical Overview
Mechanically, this simple yet sturdy platform has a reputation for durability. The same can be said for the engine, the 1KZ-TE, which is fresh off a recent service. A new engine air filter and new fuel filter were installed as part of our tune-up, and a new set of glow plugs aids quick ignition. To keep the electronics properly powered, we swapped in some new accessory belts. The 1KZ makes loads of torque and is frugal on fuel. It’s linked to a stout automatic gearbox that shifts as it should. To bolster the driveline, we serviced the front, center, and rear differentials, adding new fluid. For the best acceleration, the pilot can drive the rear axle alone, but when the terrain gets tough, 4WD can be engaged from the cabin, and the hubs can be locked electronically. A low range can also be utilized to keep momentum trudging forward. It sails up to highway speeds, and the long wheelbase distributes bumps well. New rear control arms and new front sway bar mount bushings were installed, and we aligned the chassis so it would drive straight as an arrow. The power steering is light and easy to articulate, and the disc brakes do a swell job of slowing this lovable Landy down. The Falken tires are knee deep in tread and match the overall aesthetic of the truck. Turn key and ready to rock, this special Prado is a gem!
