Exterior Overview

Japanese Classics like the Prado are back in a big way. Not that they ever left, but these trucks fill a void in the market our domestic models just can’t satisfy. Trucks like this 1997 KZJ95 are backed by a bulletproof turbodiesel drivetrain, are body-on-frame in construction, and are leagues above our tired stateside 4Runners, in terms of condition. Finished in Silver Metallic/Grey (K02), this Prado is a looker, set off by an OEM brushguard, dual amber driving lamps, and a rare hardshell tire cover and translucent rear spoiler. A TugMaster rear hitch receiver adds a bit of extra utility, OEM side graphics, factory rainguards, and 16″ Bradley alloys round off the aesthetics, and the paint is in above-average shape overall, save for a few light nicks and dings. The 87k miles on the clock are verified and documented too, which should add a fair bit of value to the next owner. Sharing a frame with our domestic 4Runners, the ownership experience on these Prados is seamless, and as a whole, we think this is one of the best classic 4×4’s you can invest in!

Interior Overview

The interior makes daily use easy. Not only is it jam packed with power amenities and creature comforts, it’s surprisingly spacious to boot, and is upholstered in a premium cloth interior that coddles all eight occupants nicely. The seats are in good shape, with no discernible rips or tears on the upholstery, and if you’re not hauling around a full squad, the third row can be stowed against the D-pillars to expand the cargo hold. Up front, both driver and passenger are pampered with amenities, like an OEM TV/Radio and an easy to use climate control system that boasts both cold A/C and hot heat. There’s even a trick factory field monitor that sits atop the dash to keep you updated on outside condition. The grey vinyl dash tucks nicely into the front of the cabin, and dual SRS and front airbags are standard for safety’s sake. Power windows, locks, and folding side mirrors work well in true Toyota fashion, and an optional power moonroof can retract to maximize natural ventilation. Rear heat is standard to make life easier for your friends and pets in the rear, and the headliner and carpet are in good shape and serve as a prime indicator that this Prado was well cared for in a prior life. Overall, this cabin is not easy to scrutinize. It should please most everyone, and even the factory carpet mats have been retained and are in great shape!

Mechanical Overview

The intercooled 1KZ-TE under the hood is worth its weight in gold, and with loads of good service performed here at the shop the next American owner should feel rest assured this bulletproof 3.0TD is ready for the road ahead. Our trained technicians have given this one the green light for the road ahead, starting with a new 12v battery and fresh oil and filter service to get you on track for future maintenance. We also replaced the water pump and thermostat, and flushed in fresh coolant as part of the repair. After we mounted up a new fuel filter and engine air cleaner, this one was ready to tackle its first stateside road test, and the 1KZ jets right up to highway speeds without issue. A smooth shifting automatic gearbox commands shifts, and we performed a fluid flush on the transmission to keep things responsive. The full-time 4WD system features a standard center locking differential and low range, and loose surfaces are but a speed bump for this 90 series. We heavily refreshed the suspension with new front lower ball joints, rear upper and lower control arms, new front swaybar links, and new shock assemblies all the way around. This super SUV is more comfortable than a 4Runner on pavement, due to its slightly heavier curb weight. We bolstered the ABS with new front brake pads and rotors, and a fresh brake fluid flush. The power steering is easy to maneuver, and after installing new inner and outer tie rods, we gave this J95 a fresh alignment, sure to maximize tread life out of the Yokohama all-terrains and keep you tracking dead straight for miles to come!
