Exterior Overview
When we evaluate an SUV, we look at serviceability, capability, safety, and performance. It’s hard to argue against the third-generation Hilux Surf, as it does everything well! This 1997 is a looker too, set off in a classic Azure Blue (8L6). Set off by a stylish rear spoiler, OEM spare tire swingarm, an aggressive factory bashbar, and Bridgestone 16″ alloys, the body is in good shape aside from some light chips, dings, and scuffs associated with normal use. Fresh off a recent service, this turbodiesel model is barely broken in and has logged only 105k verified and documented miles. Perfect for year-round adventurers, this reliable 4×4 is fun to drive and infinitely customizable. Perfect as a daily driver or dedicated overlanding beast, this Japanese Classic is efficient, collectible, and most certainly cool!
Interior Overview
The interior is spacious, includes a number of factory upgrades, and a few important safety features. The driver can find the ideal driving position thanks to a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. The controls for the automatic climate control are close by in the center stack, and the A/C blows ice cold. The heat is piping hot, too, in case you live in a more seasonal climate. Below, a period-correct Kenwood head unit works well and pipes in tunes to supplement your motoring experience. Other upgrades include a factory field monitor, which is located next to the map lights. It displays info about the outside conditions and direction of travel in case you lose cell service when overlanding to parts unknown. Power windows, power rear glass, and an electric sunroof can be opened to create a natural breeze. Electric mirrors and electric locks also work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The moon mist seats are in good nick and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The matching material can be found in the door cards, which have resisted major use and abuse over the years. The rear row has split folding seat backs that also four-way recline. The headliner is in good nick, and aside from some light carpet stains, it is hard to critique the cabin. It is clear this cockpit was cared for overseas, and even the maintenance booklets are included with the purchase and are safely stowed in the glovebox.
Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, this a just a 4Runner with a powerplant upgrade. Maintenance, modifications, and service are easy to perform and can be had on the cheap. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L churns to life care of a new 12v battery. A new fuel filter keeps unwanted contaminants out of the engine, and we replaced the intake air filter to promote top-tier fuel economy. We rehabbed the 1KZ-TE with a new valve cover gasket and half moon seal, so that oil level stays on full. The 1K pulls hard to redline and is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. Shifts feel reassured, and the driver can choose to putt around in RWD or engage 4WD on the fly. For beach trips and muddy trails, a center locker and low range 4WD can also be utilized to keep the momentum moving forward. The transfercase also benefits from a new input seal for added peace of mind. It cruises comfortably at highway speeds and can slow down in a jiffy thanks to standard ABS. One of our trained techs has chucked on a set of new pads and rotors up front to keep stopping distances as short as possible. The suspension can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse just fine and is predictable. The truck goes right where you point it and we added new steering rack bushings before it left the lift. New inner and outer tie rods assisted us in dialing in the alignment, and grip is handled by four new 31″ Falken all-terrain tires. The new rubber looks mean, but also reduces road noise and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
