Its easy to see why the Japanese love the N180 generation Surf. It's a nice balance of size and capability, and they were built to withstand heavy use and abuse. This 1997 SSR-X model is a darn good one, and would be ideal for someone motivated by ease of service and low cost of ownership. With its surefooted 4WD and efficient 2.7L engine, this Desert Dune Metallic (1A5) five-seater would be a decent candidate to be daily driven, year round. Fresh off a recent service this turn-key Toyota is offered with only 161k verified and documented miles on the clock. It doesn't just drive well, it looks handsome, and aside from a front bumper replacement and a few light dings, chips, and scrapes this Hilux is in fine shape. Set off by rear privacy tint, factory rainguards, a subtle rear OEM spoiler, a refinished set of OEM wheels, and a factory spare tire swingarm, it's definitely an all-business aesthetic. Efficient, dependable, and affordable this SUV wears the moniker of a Japanese Classic proudly!

The cabin is in above-average shape and was obviously cared for overseas. Dual SRS airbags are standard and side impact protection was improved for this generation, for those who may be safety conscious. Outward visibility is decent thanks to the vehicle's ride height and low-lying dashboard, which lacks any cracking or fading. The OEM audio works like a charm and can supply the cabin with tunes when called upon. The automatic climate control is located below and has the ability to cycle between cold A/C and piping hot heat through the cabin. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. Add in the power windows, power rear glass, power locks, and power mirrors and you have all the makings of a superb daily driver. The desirable Moon Mist upholstery was spec'd in this truck and lacks any major rips or tears. The door cards and headliner are in above-average shape as well. Aside from some light staining on the seats and carpets and a small crack on the center armrest, it's really hard to complain about this Toyota and we know the next owner will agree! Even the owner's manuals are still in the glovebox!

The 2.7L under the hood is a bang-up engine, and was sold here in the US for those who want a seamless service experience. The 3RZ-FE is fresh off an oil and filter service and turns over with the twist of the key. A new 12v battery aids ignition and the four-banger benefits from a new fuel filter and engine air filter that was installed here in the shop. It's normal at 26 years old to have a few oil leaks and one of our trained techs has addressed those pesky things, as you might expect. A new oil pump seal, distributor O-ring, and oil filter housing gasket were taken care of so that all that 5W-30 stays where it should, inside the engine! Linked to a stout automatic gearbox the four-cylinder Surfs accelerate almost as well as the V6 models. Highway cruising is effortless at our higher American interstate speeds and if you have an off-road excursion planned, this RZN185 has your back. A selective transfercase allows for 4WD to be engaged and even a low-gearing setting can be chosen for inclement weather or loose surfaces. If you are concerned about slowing this rig down, rest assured ABS is standard equipment. Even better new front brake pads and rotors were just installed so that this hauler can stop on a dime. The suspension does well on rough road surfaces and tons of ground clearance is awarded to whoever is behind the wheel. New front end links were replaced for state inspection purposes and the power steering is light yet on point. Lastly, we wrapped the factory alloys in new 31" Falken rubber. They quiet down the road noise a tad and most importantly will deliver tens of thousands of miles of year-round grip for a good while to come.
