1997 Hilux Surf SSR-V 2.7L

Stock #5978

This 1997 Hilux Surf blends classic retro aesthetics with a modern, easy-to-service drivetrain and year-round 4WD capability. Fresh off a recent service, this SSR-V would make for a wonderful turnkey daily driver, fun family hauler, or determined weekend cruiser. With only a mere 84k verified and documented miles on the clock, this Toyota is barely broken in, and a has logged a fraction of the miles of the typical American 4Runner. This handsome Surf sports a fresh coat of Quicksand Beige (4V6) and is set off by a 2" lift, one-off grille, subtle privacy tint, and a set of refinished Pajero alloys shod in grippy 33" all-terrain Falkens. Aside from a few light paint imperfections, the body is in good shape although we wanted to note that the passenger side door and fender were replaced at some point in Japan. No worse for the wear this example drives impressively well and is a Japanese Classic that is affordable, tough, and ready to perform!

The cabin boasts a few upgrades and optional equipment. It's also logically laid out and appears to have been cared for in a prior life. The Moon Mist seats are in wonderful nick, lacking any cracking or fading. The cloth is soft to the touch and durable, too. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and manually adjustable lumbar support. Located by the map lights an OEM Field Monitor displays information about the outside conditions to those within the cabin, which is helpful when travelling out of cell phone range. The dashboard houses standard dual front SRS airbags and it lacks any cracks or weather-related distortion. The center stack lacks audio but on the positive side offers a simple-to-use climate control system. Cold air conditioning is useful for these last dog days of summer and heat is available on demand for the winter ahead. Power windows, door locks, and electric side and rear glass make daily use more enjoyable and work in typical Toyota fashion. The headliner is in good nick, as are the door cards aside from some light cuts on the drivers unit. We also wanted to note the power sunroof no longer tilts or retracts and that there is some normal light carpet staining. Frankly, at 25 years old, that's a bit of nitpicking, and the condition of the cabin is much better than the average American 4Runners you'll see for sale that are of this vintage.

Like our US 4Runners, this Surf is powered by the efficient and trustworthy 3RZ-FE. The 2.7L is fresh off an oil and filter service and turns over with the twist of the key, care of a new 12v battery we installed here in the shop. To ensure it stays full of lubricant one of our trained techs replaced the weary old valve cover gasket with a new one and a new distributor o-ring. With the oil leaks sorted, we replaced the engine air filter and fuel filter with new units and the four-banger feels fresh as a daisy. The powerplant is linked to a slick-shifting automatic gearbox that makes good use of the gasser's powerband. A selective transfer case allows the driver to grind out a few more MPGs with a 2WD setting, and to engage 4WD when need be. For snow or beach duty, even a low range can be accessed to keep the momentum moving forward. New front and rear transfercase output seals were taken care of and fresh fluid was pumped in. To slow you down, standard ABS brakes are ready and capable. Bolstered by new front brake pads and rotors they clamp down with force. The suspension provides loads of ground clearance and has a predictable feel overall. The power steering is light yet on point and new front and rear sway bar bushings were installed. Lastly, we mounted and balanced these mean 33" Falkens. The meaty rubber matches the all-business aesthetic and will provide tens of thousands of miles of grip for years to come.
