Exterior Overview
This Hilux Surf is a do-it-all type of SUV. It’s got vast parts support, is capable, reliable, and handsome, to boot. Finished in a fresh coat of Pepper White (850), this SSR-V model is set off by 16″ aftermarket alloys, an OEM spare tire swingarm, and some classy OEM rainguards. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs the paint is in good shape, and this 68k verified and documented mile rig is barely broken in. Fresh off a recent service, this turn-key Japanese Classic would make for a durable year-round daily driver, cool family hauler, or overlanding allstar!
Interior Overview
The cabin is simple, ergonomic, and includes some decent safety equipment. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard. A tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support are afforded to the pilot so they may find the optimal seating position. Power mirrors, power locks, power windows, and electric rear glass all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The OEM audio system pumps tunes through the cabin and sounds great. Above, a simple-to-use climate system doles out cold air conditioning and piping hot heat. The seats steal the show with a special blue and black cloth. The material lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The middle row can split, fold, and tumble forward to create a larger cargo area. They also four-way recline for optimum rear seat comfort. The door cards, headliner, and carpets are in good shape, and overall, the cabin condition is above average, and it’s clear the Japanese owner kept this Surf in good nick.
Mechanical Overview
Under the hood, this rig is no different to service than a 4Runner or Tacoma. The 3RZ-FE that powers this truck was sold here in the US and is fresh off an oil and filter service. It churns to life promptly courtesy of a rebuilt starter and new 12v battery. A new engine air filter and fuel filter were installed, and the 2.7L feels healthy as a horse. It’s mated to a stout automatic gearbox that feeds torque through a selectable transfercase. The pilot can choose between driving in 2WD for top-tier economy and acceleration, but 4WD can be engaged on the fly when necessary. A low range can also be deployed for beach cruises and for trips up the trailhead. The four-cylinder makes enough power to safely merge up to highway speeds, and the shifts feel reassured. A fresh transmission fluid service was performed while it was on the lift, so that things stay on the up and up. It slows down with confidence, too, and ABS is standard equipment. The power steering is light yet direct, and we have aligned this Surf so that the freshly mounted 31″ Falken tires last as long as possible. Reliable, tough, and inexpensive to operate, this is our best-selling SUV for all too many reasons.
