1997 was a good year for Toyota. The 3rd generation N185 was just hitting its stride, flying off the sales floors and other showrooms domestically and abroad. This tasteful SSR-X is finished in a rare Sunfire Red Pearl over Gray two-tone (3K4). Accessorized by a set of polished 16" alloys wrapped in wide all-terrain Falkens, an OEM rear spoiler, factory rainguards, and a JDM spare tire swingarm, the RZN185 has an almost athletic aesthetic. Aside from some light dings, chips, clearcoat imperfections, and scuffs, this wonderful rig is no worse for the wear, and this freshly serviced five-seater is offered with a mere 65k verified and documented miles. Boasting the same reliable 2.7L engine as American spec 4Runners, this lovely ute is famous for its durability and low cost of ownership. Such a striking, unique, and useful low-mileage hauler like this example can be hard to find here in the states, but alas, this turn-key N185 is ready to rock. Collectible, practical, and primed for year-round use, this Japanese Classics receives top marks all around!

The cabin is spacious and ergonomically laid out. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering wheel and adjustable lumbar support to find the ideal driving position. Traffic is easily visible as the seating position allows for a relatively high perch as well! The front passengers will rest easy knowing dual SRS airbags are standard and the dashboard itself lacks any cracking or fading. Mounted centrally is an automatic climate control system that can be utilized for cold A/C in the summer and piping hot heat for these last few cold snaps of the year. If you prefer more natural ventilation a power retractable sunroof and electric side and rear glass are happy to oblige you with a cool breeze when unfurled. Power locks and electric folding side mirrors work like a charm and make daily use more enjoyable. For those planning to commute or head off on a long road trip, we have upgraded the useless JDM radio to a fully functional USDM Bluetooth-equipped unit. For any aspiring overlanders, a factory field monitor is affixed to the headliner and displays a bevy of useful environmental data. The upholstery lacks any major rips, stains, or tears and the rear row can be folded flat to maximize cargo. The door cards and the headliner has held up to the past twenty-five years of use without sustaining major damage and the carpet is in good nick aside from some light staining. It even has a drop-down rear mirror that unfurls from the rear spoiler to act as an analog '90s backup camera. Overall the cabin was cared for in a prior life and it clearly shows!

Under the skin lies a tough body on frame structure built to stand the test of time. The lightweight and punchy 3RZ-FE provides propulsion and is fresh off an oil and filter service. A new 12v battery assists the starter, and with the twist of a key, the Surf whirrs to life. To maximize fuel economy and deliver seamless acceleration a new distributor, rotor button, set of spark plugs and wires, and a new fuel filter have been installed. Proper metering of the intake air is handled by a new mass air flow sensor and the 2.7L idles and revs with confidence. The powerplant is linked to a smooth shifting automatic that makes decent use of the 3RZs powerband. A selective transfercase offers three settings including high and low-range 4WD and 2WD for top-tier MPG. Stable at highway speeds, this platform features a multi-link suspension that performs well over pavement and is also capable off the beaten path. Large and small potholes alike are gobbled up by the shocks, and the ride is predictable and smooth. Power steering is standard and the light feel is ideal for city parking and daily use. We did have to replace the front right inner and outer tie rods for state inspection, but now this Hilux steers right as rain. The ABS brakes have been bolstered by new front brake pads and confidently slow down this midsize from speed without breaking a sweat. The aforementioned 31" all-terrains are brand-spanking new and were mounted and balanced to complete the reconditioning process. These new tires keep road noise down, but most importantly will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
