1997 Civic EK2
The Honda Civic is a timeless nameplate, having gone through numerous generations of fun, fuel-efficient, FWD iterations. This 1997 EK2 Civic came out a full 25 years after the original version debuted. By the mid-1990's it's fair to say the brand had nearly perfected its hatchback design and these EKs were instant Japanese Classics. Finished in Adriatic Blue Pearl (B74-P), this compact Honda is bone stock on the exterior, with a set of black OEM rain guards being the only accessory to note. Aside from a few light imperfections, the paint is in good shape and prior repairs in Japan include a replacement hatch. Our four-seater boasts a mere 68k verified and documented miles, is fresh off a recent service and is barely broken in as far as Honda's go. Inexpensive to maintain, economical, and stylish this recently serviced ride is turn-key and ready to rock. For the Honda die-hard looking for a clean, unmolested platform to modify or daily drive this reliable, safe and frugal EK is an ideal option, and it surely won't last long.
The cabin is clean, tidy, and in above-average shape overall. The view of the road ahead is clear and the low-lying dashboard stays out of the driver's line of sight. Unlike earlier iterations of the vehicle, this one comes with dual front SRS airbags for some added peace of mind when behind the wheel. For drivers looking to use this classic EK for day-to-day activities, plenty of power amenities are on the ready to make daily use more enjoyable. Power locks, mirrors, and windows all work as advertised in typical Honda fashion. To find the most comfortable driving position a tilt-adjustable steering column can be utilized and the soft textured cloth seats are nicely bolstered. They lack any major rips, stains or tears and the material remains in good shape on the matching door cards as well. The headliner is tight and taut and in good nick. It's truly hard to complain about such a flawless cabin but we must note that the 26 year old OEM headunit has given up the ghost. On the positive side the Civic still retains the retractable OEM cargo security shade which are normally tossed out in Japan and there are no offensive odors or other major condition issues of note. It even has the OEM carpet mats, which have kept the original carpet clean and are in incredible shape!
The front-wheel drive layout is great for maximizing space within the cabin and providing traction in slippery conditions. Our Civic is powered by the tried and true D13B four-banger. Fresh off an oil and filter service the engine starts up promptly and benefits from a new 12v battery which will last for years to come. The D-Series idles with confidence thanks to a new engine air filter and is mated to a smooth shifting automatic gearbox. It does a good job at maximizing the Honda's power and the light curb weight allows for spritely acceleration. The suspension is able to handle the rigors of daily use and abuse and the ground clearance is fantastic in case you have a propensity to ram those concrete parking barriers at the local quick-mart. A light refresh was in order when this hatch arrived stateside, and one of our trained techs installed new trailing arm bushings out back. The brakes are confident and the power steering is light and on point. To complete the list of maintenance items prior to the sale we mounted and balanced four brand-new tires. They quiet down the road noise a bunch and most importantly they will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
