The third-generation Hilux Surf is one of our favorite do-it-all SUV's, and with a cultlike following across the globe, these prolific rigs need no introduction. For discerning off-road enthusiasts that need a go-anywhere vehicle, this trick JDM 4Runner is a top candidate. Backed by a fuel sipping gas inline-four and versatile selectable 4WD, it's no surprise the Surf is one of our most popular Japanese Classics. This 1997 SSR-X model is a trail-ready head turner, donning an iconic Stellar Blue/Silver (8L7) two-tone. The aesthetic is more modern looking thanks to the TRD style graphics package. The exterior shows well, with no issues to note aside from some expected rock chips and minor fading on the paintwork. Exterior modification is sparse, OEM rainguards make for some sleek accessorizing, and a set of refinished 16" alloys look fantastic against the factory wide fender flares. Set off with a new set of Falken all-terrain rubber this Surf is ready to crawl over whatever obstacles await. With only 98k verified/documented miles this N185 is just getting broken in, and with some choice mechanical work performed in-house, we have this terrific truck turn key, ready to rip!

Japanese market Toyotas are commonly championed for their build quality, inside and out, and the interior of this truck is spacious, clean, and every bit as durable as the rest of the vehicle. Dual SRS airbags are a highly requested option here, and they are standard on the Surf. The dash is in great nick overall, with no pesky cracks, peeling, or UV damage to note, although we did want to point out two pinholes above the center stack. The patterned cloth upholstery is set off by corduroy accents and shows well, with no rips, or tears to note, and the factory cloth has resisted any serious staining over the years as well aside from the trunk area. The complementary black plastic dash trim is in good shape and houses a touchscreen Eclipse audio upgrade and a fully functional automatic climate control unit. A/C blows cold when needed, and the heat is hot for anyone looking to use this one as a dedicated winter warrior. Power windows, locks, and power mirrors work without a hitch and make the drive comfortable and enjoyable for all passengers both front and rear. The power rear glass even unfurls to give some extra ventilation to your furry friends in the back. The back seats are roomy, folding fully forward and reclining back to accommodate any storage or sleeping situation. Overall, this Surf has a true swiss army knife of an interior, and aside from some light staining on the rear seats the next owner should be more than satisfied with the condition. We even included the original owner's manual and maintenance booklet, great items to keep on hand to further protect your classic JDM investment.

Under the hood, the 2.7L power plant has proven to be a fiercely reliable unit over the years. With nearly all the parts shared with its USDM 4Runner counterpart, servicing is a cakewalk! The motor fires up with the twist of a key thanks to a new 12v battery, and a fresh oil and filter service helps keep this engine topped up on lubricant. The 3RZ-FE is a fantastic engine, offering plenty of get up and go for sustained highway driving, all while getting great fuel mileage as well! We installed a fresh air filter to maximize power and MPG's as well. The automatic transmission shifts smoothly, and the selective transfercase allows the driver both high and low gear options to traverse any less-than-ideal terrain. The suspension is pleasantly comfortable and compliant over loose surfaces, and despite its commanding ride height, the Surf is quite predictable in the handling department thanks to new shocks on all four corners and new swaybar end links. The power steering is light and on point for an SUV, and we installed fresh Falken rubber on all four corners to keep this terrific Toyota gripping the road for years to come.
