This 1996 Surf is a special truck. It's a stunner, with its fresh coat Marine Blue (LRC006) paint and is further set off by refinished factory alloys, a sweet looking rear swing arm, and a set of OEM rainguards. Aside from a few slight imperfections the body is in good nick and this gasser is fresh off a recent service. Boasting only 113k verified and documented miles, this baby is barely broken in. Sharing the same drivetrain as our Stateside 2.7l 4Runner, this rig is easy to service and inexpensive to own. Reliable, capable, and visually impactful, this Japanese Classic 4x4 would be a delightful daily driver or cool campsite crawler.
The cabin is in wonderful nick and a few upgrades and factory options make it special. The power sunroof makes the interior feel much larger thanks to the abundance of natural light, and tilts and retracts to provide everyone inside with a light breeze. The windows and rear glass also retract for even more ventilation. If it's muggy outside, the automatic climate control blasts cold A/C and the heat works like a charm as well. The driver benefits from a tilt adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support to find the ideal driving position. Toyota also had the rear occupants comfort in mind, and the bench can 4-way recline unlike our stateside models. It also can be split folded and tumbles forward to create a flat loading floor. Dual SRS airbags are standard and the dashboard lacks any cracking or fading. By the map lights an OEM field monitor resides and displays the exterior temperature, direction of travel and even barometic pressure. Tunes are handled by a modern looking Pioneer headunit. It sounds good for a car of this age and is great for drowning out the kids. Power locks and mirrors function and make daily driving even more enjoyable. The headliner, door cards and carpet are in good nick and aside from some light carpet stains it's really hard to complain about the interior as a whole. Even the owners manuals, maintenance booklets, and fitted carpet mats are included in the purchase.
The bones of this truck are shared with our US N185s, making it a breeze to maintain. The 3RZ-FE under the bonnet is a tough little four banger, and is fresh off an oil and filter service. It whirrs to life care of a new 12v battery and breathes freely care of a new engine air filter. Ready for an immediate road trip we have replaced the old leaky valve cover gasket with a new unit and installed a set of spark plugs. The 3RZ is linked to a stout automatic that shifts gears just as it should. Peppy about town and comfortable on the highway, this four-pot performs almost as well as its big block V6 cousin. The selective transfercase allows the driver to choose between two and four wheel drive on the fly, and for low traction scenarios, the pilot can engage low range 4WD. The suspension is predictable and offers loads of ground clearance. We refreshed the ride quality with a set of new rear shocks, and the platform feels solid as a rock. New front sway bar bushings were installed as well, for state inspection. The ABS brakes feel confident and the power steering is light yet on point. We even replaced all four tires so that the new owner can hit the road with all the tread they'll need for tens of thousands of miles to come. We also gave the Surf a fresh alignment.
