The do-it-all Toyota Hilux was designed to be rugged, reliable, family-friendly, and an ideal overlanding vehicle. We were deprived of the 1KZ-TE turbo diesel engine option here stateside with the only available option of gas models, until now. This 1996 Toyota Hilux SSR-V is an excellent example that checks all the boxes. This Stellar Blue (8L7) rig stands tall and the body is in great shape and shows well. Although for being a quarter of a century old, you will find some scuffs and minor blemishes from typical use on and off the road. Outfitted with brand new rubber at all four corners, you can toss the concern for traction out the window. While it's clear this SUV has been well maintained during its life in Japan the miles are unknown and unverified due to the odometer no longer functioning. Recently serviced by our trained technicians this turn-key, retail-ready rig is waiting for you here at Japanese Classics.

The cabin of this SSR-V Hilux is spacious enough to comfortably seat 5 passengers. The seats are trimmed in a soft light gray and blue cloth and have held up well over the years showing no major rips or stains. The driver front door card does show some light wear and minor kicks in the vinyl but the others are free of major blemishes. 1996 was the first year where you can find dual SRS airbags as a standard safety feature, a nice perk for a vehicle this vintage. The analog gauges are simple to read at a quick glance so you can keep your attention on the road, or trail, ahead. The original Toyota radio was ditched for a Kenwood radio which operates as it should for some tunes in the cabin. Amenities include a factory keyless entry remote, power windows, power locks, and power mirror adjustments for driver comfort when you're behind the wheel. The climate controls are simple and blow cold A/C on demand as well as heat when you need it. You also have the option to open the sunroof to allow a fresh breeze and with the OEM rain guards, you can crack the windows without getting rained on. Overall a great example of a well-taken cared-for Toyota Hilux Surf.

The turbo diesel 4 banger is packed with torque and power. The diesel powerplant is popular for good reason, they are extremely reliable and the 1KZ-TE engine is a great option now that they are legal here stateside. This Hilux starts right up without hesitation thanks to the new 12V battery installed when the vehicle was inspected here at Japanese Classics. Additionally, a fresh oil and filter service ensures worry free ownership for the next 3,000 miles. This 3rd gen Hilux is mated up to an automatic transmission, with selectable 4WD and a center locking differential, easily activated with a button on the shifter to help get your friend's Jeep out of a sticky situation. Thanks to the new tires at all four corners traction in any weather won't be a concern and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come, The transmission shifts smoothly through the gears and the power is linear. There is no concern about getting this SSR-V up to highway speeds and the MPG can be fantastic depending on how heavy your foot is. The brakes are confident and respond quickly when you need to slow this rig down to a stop thanks to new brake pads and rotors on the front and rear. The suspension is comfortable over speed bumps and potholes without throwing you around the cabin.
