For decades, off road enthusiasts have been equipping their rigs with custom overland builds, constructing stowaway beds, camping amenities, and extra storage in the trunks of their full sized SUV's to better sustain life on the road. In the 90's, Toyota saw this demand and began outfitting their 80 series Land Cruisers from the factory with all inclusive camping packages, spawning the "Active Vacation" trim option. Of course, as is the case with many Toyotas, the Active Vacation Cruiser was not offered to the US market, but thanks to the 25 year rule, examples like this 1996 HDJ81 can be had at a pleasantly affordable price point. Bearing only 113k verified/documented miles, this Land Cruiser sports Toyota's brawny 1HD-T turbo diesel powerplant and full time 4wd. The exterior is finished in a sleek Deep Emerald Pearl over Moonglow Pearl two tone. Set off only by minor OEM upgrades, like OEM rainguards, a spare tire carrier, and rear ladder, this 80 has all the makings of an instant Japanese Classic Land Cruiser and is sure to take its next owner to whatever on or off road adventures await.

The cabin is spacious, with ample head and leg room available to comfortably seat 5 passengers. The low profile dash is clear of any cracking, peeling or sun fading, and the driver even benefits from a tilt adjustable steering column and an SRS front airbag to add some extra accessibility and peace of mind. The seats are trimmed in a plush grey cloth and show nicely given the age of the interior. The driver's seat even has adjustable lumbar support and power side bolsters! Aside from some light pilling on the suede like material the rest of the upholstery remains in good nick, and the OEM floor mats are even present to preserve the clean carpet underneath. The automatic climate control system is easy to use and cold A/C is armed and ready if needed. For a classic vehicle there are certainly more than enough power amenities to keep the drive comfortable. Power windows, power folding mirrors, and a power moonroof all operate at the push of a button, and the OEM field monitor provides some useful information for off road excursions. The Active Vacation is a true business in the front, party in the back vehicle. Pop the trunk and you're greeted with a full service camping suite, ready to set up at whichever site you choose. The rear seats fold forward and within seconds the full size sleeping surface is ready for a quick post-roadtrip snooze. Flip open the leftmost storage compartment and a camping stove and sink are ready for action (propane not included)! This is truly one of the most versatile interiors we've ever seen and aside from some peeling and defects on the lower dash trim it's hard to complain about the condition of this interior. The original owner's manual is even included too!

Under the hood, the 4.2l turbo diesel power plant is nothing to scoff at. A champion in fuel economy, reliability, and down low torque, there's not much the 1HD-T can't do, and this updated 24 valve version is plenty powerful for your on and off road excursions. This beast cranks to life care of two new 12v batteries and idles smooth and confident thanks to a fresh oil change. Acceleration is plentiful, and you'll be able to cruise this camper at higher speeds with no hesitation. The automatic transmission is smooth shifting and geared comfortably for highway driving, and the selectable transfer case offers both high and low gears to quickly climb out of any less than desirable situations. The suspension is soft and composed and soaks up road imperfections with ease, whether you're on the asphalt or traversing loose surfaces. Our trained technicians have installed a new valve cover gasket and even mounted and balanced 5 new tires, sure to provide plenty of traction for your next overland adventure.
