If you want to explore the great unknown, this 1996 Hilux Surf will get you there! This top-of-the-range model boasts plenty of optional equipment and packs an intercooled turbodiesel that provides torque for days. Finished in Stellar Blue over Gray Metallic (8L7) two-tone, the body and paint are in good shape aside from some light dings, chips, and scuffs associated with normal use. Rocking a stylish OEM rear spoiler, tow hitch, INNO roof rack base mounts, and aftermarket raingaurds, this SUV looks just as good as it drives. Offered with a mere 142k verified and documented miles, this tough truck is barely broken in. For a midsize sport-utility, and occasional on and off-road use, these Toyotas are impossible to beat. Fun, efficient, and fast, these N185s don't last long.

When this generation Hilux debuted it was a huge step up in refinement and safety. Dual SRS airbags and ABS became standard, but they didn't stop there. Toyota added an automatic climate control system for the first time and this one works like a charm. It blows cold A/C, but if you prefer natural ventilation the electric windows and rear glass can unfurl with the press of a button. One of the center vents is stuck in place and cannot be adjusted, but the system works fine otherwise. The driver also benefits from a tilt steering column, adjustable lumbar support, and power locks and mirrors. This makes daily use more enjoyable, but wait, there is more! To save on costly insurance claims, a powered OEM rear under-mirror can deploy from the rear spoiler to give a driver a good idea of what is behind this Surf when parking. The seats are upholstered in light blue corduroy material, they are comfortable on long hauls and can be folded forward for a pseudo sleeping surface. One interesting fact about the rear seats is that they are four-way reclinable, unlike the US 4Runner! They lack any major rips, stains, or tears, and were cared for in a prior life. That is not to say the cabin is perfect as we wanted to mention that there is light staining on the carpets and headliner, and that the tachometer and power-folding functions on the side mirrors are inoperable. On the positive side it does have the orginial owners manuals, OEM carpet mats, and maintenance booklet on hand!

The mechanicals are rock solid and the powertrain is an all-star. This legendary engine, the 1KZ-TE wasn't offered in the states, but was sold all around the globe. It makes great power, is highly efficient, easy to find parts for, and can unleash a good deal of torque when called upon. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L cranks over promptly with a twist of the key thanks to two new 12v batteries. It breathes more freely thanks to a new engine air filter and includes a slate of other preventative maintenance. While up on our lift we fitted new serpentine belts and replaced the valve cover so the next owner feels reassured about daily driving. Known for its low-end grunt the automatic transmission feels perfectly suited for this turbodiesel. It is peppy in the city and gets up to highway speeds in a hurry. It lacks any hesitation while shifting, and the selective transfer case allows the driver to switch between two and four-wheel drive on the fly. Compared to US 4Runner the Japanese trucks have an additional trick up their sleeve. A locking center differential can be engaged from inside of the cabin making quick work of loose surfaces. We recommend a quick beach trip after purchasing this rig! The brakes stop this midsize sport-utility down quickly. A new set of brake pads on the front axle have given them a new lease on life and they really bite down. The OEM TEMS adjustable suspension is planted and predictable and can handle large and small potholes alike. The steering is power-assisted and on point. Lastly, we replaced all the tires with 31" Falkens and even took care of the spare. The new rubber looks all-business, but most importantly will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
