1996 Toyota Hilux SSR-X
During the mid-1990s Toyota was producing some incredible cars, SUVs, and trucks. This 1996 Hilux is a great example of one of the most iconic pickups from this legendary brand's golden era. Finished in a Black over Gray two-tone (2BN), the paint is in good condition aside from the normal light dings, chips, and scuffs associated with regular use. Offered with a mere 100k verified and documented miles, this recently serviced rig is barely broken in. Packing a torquey turbodiesel, a capable 4WD system, and tons of room for friends and family, this rig is tough to beat and a certified Japanese Classic.
The cabin is more spacious, for obvious reasons than stateside versions of the truck. The Double Cab configuration drivers plenty of legroom for rear occupants and the greenhouse feels larger thanks to the abundance of natural light. Visibility of the road ahead is top tier and the dash lacks any cracking or distortion. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and electric locks, windows, and power mirrors. These all work as advertised, making daily use enjoyable. The OEM audio and climate control work like a charm and A/C is on hand for the quickly approaching summer. The gray upholstery is in above-average shape other than some seat bottom wear on the driver's side. Aside from that the material lacks any major rips, stains or tears, The headliner is in good shape and door cards and carpets have withstood major abuse over the years. That's not to say the cabin is perfect as we wanted to note that the fuel gauge only reads up to a half tank when filled, and the driver's front seat belt receptacle trim has cracked, but other than that it's really hard to complain about this pickup. It was loved in a prior life and you can tell!
The body-on-frame platform is simple, built to last, and sturdy. This SSR-X is powered by Toyota's 2L-TE turbodiesel. Fresh off an oil and filter service, this four-cylinder jolts to life care of two new 12v batteries. A new fuel filter has been added by one of our trained techs and the 2.4L idles with confidence. Thermal management is handled by a shiny new aluminum radiator, which should add some peace of mind for the next buyer. The automatic gearbox makes good use of the engine's powerband and is connected to a selective 4WD system. The driver can choose between 2WD for efficiency and 4WD high and low for less than ideal weather conditions. New front and rear shocks have refreshed the suspension nicely and she drives great on the tarmac. The brakes are confident and the power steering is light and easy to articulate. New Falken all-terrains have been mounted at all four corners and look tough. They will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and provide all the premium year-round grip you can need.
