Redesigning a nearly perfect midsize SUV is a tall task, and Toyota was up for that challenge with this 1996 Hilux Surf. Offering a more refined ride, more safety features, and selective 4x4 is hard not to love this truck. Finished in a Desert Dune Metallic (1A5) the body is in good shape aside from some normal dings and chips associated with day-to-day use. This 96K verified miles SSR-G is the complete package combining some flashy factory aero with a bulletproof 3.0L turbodiesel, this is about as desirable as they get!

The cabin is in above average shape overall. Choked loaded with power amenities such as power mirrors, locks, and windows, the Hilux Surf also added quite a few standard safety features. Most importantly was the addition of dual front SRS airbags. Other neat add ons included a digital compass and gauge suite mounted next to the dome light. The dash is in good shape and lacks any major imperfections such as cracks or fading. The center stack includes a working OEM TV/Navi radio unit and a set of cupholders that retract out with the press of a button. Automatic climate is standard as well and rather simple to operate. We prefer the more natural ventilation which includes the windows down in combination with the rear powered glass. The gray seats are in good shape overall and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. They are soft to the touch and offer decent support on long drives. The headliner is clean; as are the door cards and carpets. Even the original owner's manuals are in the glovebox and are included in the sale for originality's sake.

The second-generation N185 was upgraded in several respects. The chassis is more rigid which lends itself to fewer squeaks and rattles. The heat of this beast is the tried and true Toyota's 1KZ-TE four-banger turbodiesel. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L mill springs to life thanks to a new 12V battery. Connected to a selective 4WD system through an automatic gearbox, the gear changes feel more reassured than the prior gen SUV. The 4WD system does have low gearing available and a center locking differential is on tap for when the going gets tough. The TEMS suspension has a setting for hard and soft ride quality and this N185 has fantastic suspension for daily use. Large potholes are shrugged off with ease and the who vehicle just feels more put together overall on rough pavement. New front brakes help this heavy truck to slow down and ower steering makes parking a snap in the city. Our favorite feature is a powered rear window mirror that can be adjusted to see your bumper and the car behind you whilst parking. The alloy wheels are wrapped in new all-terrain tires at all four corners. Our techs even did the spare tire as well. These meaty units look great and more importantly can handle all the rain sleet and snow that you can throw at them for years to come.
