Roomy, plush people haulers are plentiful in the Land of the Rising Sun. This 1996 HiAce totally changes one's perception of what a minivan is, especially if you're used to our bland stateside models. In Japan, the idea was to design a platform that would cater to passengers like a luxury sedan and also include the same types of upmarket amenities typically reserved for high-end vehicles to dress up the cabin. Offered with a mere 75k verified and documented miles, this SuperCustom includes the powerful and efficient 1KZ-TE turbodiesel to keep running costs low! Accented by a set of rain guards and rear window tint, this Toyota is finished in a stately White over Cashmere Two-tone. The body is in good shape aside from some minor dings and scuffs associated with normal use. Recently serviced and legally imported, this eight-seat cruiser is the perfect Japanese Classic for taking the kids to class or a trusty steed to set out on a cross country family road trip!

The cabin is spacious, well equipped, and has been cared for over the years. The nice thing about cab-over designs is that they offer better than average visibility and a tidy turning radius for better maneuverability. Enter the cockpit and you'll immediately notice the OEM lace seat covers. Rarely found at this point, they add a bit of authenticity to this clean van. The dashboard itself lacks any cracking or distortion and includes centrally mounted OEM audio and dual-zone digital climate control. The speaker quality is decent for its age and the a/c blows cold, which is key during these long summer months. The driver also receives a tilt-adjustable steering column, and door controls for the functional electric windows, mirrors, and power locks. Even the power-folding mirrors still work, which is key for those who have to park in the city. The front sunroof adds some additional ventilation through a manual tilt function, but the impressive panoramic sliding moonroof located in the middle of the van steals the show. To enter the rear of the vehicle, slide open the automatic soft-close side door. Years ahead of its time, if one of the kids cant muster it closed fully it will electrically pull itself shut, thereby saving your precious battery from draining. Located in the middle row, this massive glass roof assembly retracts so far that it almost feels like you're in a convertible. It adds some ventilation and can be covered by a cloth panel to obscure the sun if necessary. Believe it or not, the third-row passengers also have a sunroof that tilts so they can feel included. The middle row bench can slide and swivel 180 degrees and the rear seats can fold flat and even be completely removed. The cloth upholstery is soft to the touch and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. Rear privacy tint keeps temps down further and the harmful rays of the sun off the interior plastics. The area behind the rear seats is big enough for a few suitcases and with the seats removed the space is cavernous. The headliner and door cards are in above average shape and the carpets lack any major blemishes.

The drivetrain is a thing of beauty, and this Toyota utilizes the legendary 1KZ-TE. This 3.0L four-banger is fresh off an oil and filter service and starts up promptly thanks to a new 12v battery. An automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels and shifts seamlessly. Mounted between the front wheels, low in the chassis, the van is better balanced than the nose-heavy Fords and Chryslers sold domestically. That's not to say this corners like a Lotus, but it is definitely better balanced which can be helpful should you need to execute an evasive driving maneuver. Sustained highway treks are stress-free, even at high US interstate speeds and low-end acceleration is actually brisk. The suspension provides plenty of ground clearance and happily soaks up bumps large and small on the tarmac. The brakes feel confident and the power steering is light and easy to articulate. The wheels all have new all-season tires mounted at all four corners. They quiet down the ride nicely and will deliver premium year-round grip for tens of thousands of miles to come.
