Exterior Overview
The 90 Series is a seriously good truck. It’s highly refined, capable, and looks classically handsome. Finished in Dark Green Pearl (6P3) with bedlined lower cladding, this rugged off-roader is set off by an OEM optional roof ladder, J90 front end conversion, and a set of 16″ ProComp Extreme alloys shod in 33″ Falken all terrains. Aside from a few light dings and scuffs the body is in good shape and this rig is fresh off a recent service. Boasting only 75k verified and documented miles, this intercooled turbodiesel TX model is barely broken in. Spacious, safe, and distinctive, this Japanese Classic is ready to rock and hit the road! Trustworthy enough to be daily driven and versatile enough to cruise through the Serengeti, this 1996 Land Cruiser does everything well and looks good doing it!
Interior Overview
While closely related to the Hilux Surf mechanically, the interior is a major difference. This Prado is wider, longer, and taller which is ideal for transporting people and cargo. It also includes a third row, which adds two extra seats in a pinch. The view of the road ahead is clear, as this tall SUV rides above traffic. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and houses dual SRS airbags for some added peace of mind. The center stack includes a handy pull out cup holder, functional pioneer radio upgrade, and digital automatic climate control. The heat is boiling hot and the air conditioner works like a charm. For those who plan to daily drive, power windows, power locks, and power mirrors make life easier. Another upgrade is the fitted Dotty leather seat covers which add a modern feel to the cabin. The upholstery below matches to door cards which are in good nick. The headliner is held taut to the roof and the carpets have withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse. Aside from a nonfunctioning field monitor it’s hard to complain about the cabin. It even includes some aftermarket carpet mats, which complement the aesthetic nicely and work to protect your cabin against unwanted wear and tear.
Mechanical Overview
This body-on-frame SUV was designed to last. The same can be said for the 1KZ-TE which powers it. This intercooled version makes more horsepower than the non intercooled version and also runs lower EGTs, promoting engine longevity. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 1K cranks to life care of two new 12v batteries. While it turns over promptly, we did want to note a broken glow plug in cylinder 3. Tuned up and ready to roll, we replaced the fuel filter and engine air filter when it rolled onto the lift. One of our trained techs also attended to a valve cover gasket leak so that the oil level stays on full. When we were replacing the valve cover gasket we also took care of the half-moon seal, too. The 3.0L is mated to a stout automatic gearbox that shifts just as it should. It gets up to highway speeds quickly, and the Full-Time 4WD system feels surefooted. If an off-road escapade is in the cards, a center locker can be dialed in and low-range 4WD engaged to keep momentum moving forward. If your aim is to slow this truck down, rest assured knowing anti-lock brakes is standard equipment. Even better, we have improved braking performance by bleeding the brakes and adding a set of rear brake pads. The power steering is direct and on point and this rig drives straight as an arrow thanks to a fresh alignment. Grip is handled by four brand new 33″ Falkens that we mounted and balanced prior to its Virginia state safety inspection. The suspension gobbles up potholes large and small alike, and is soft, yet predictable feeling. Overall, this platform is a jack of all trades and is a nice balance of off-road capability and over-the-pavement performance.
